Auto detection screen-resolution for install
At this moment you can, in the install-bootscreen, select what resolution you want to use. As being a 'not total-noob' I know that I have to select the proper resolution for my screen. But I guess new users don't see that option and they end up with an install-screen that is to small (or deformed) and does have a refreshrate less then 60. We have to fix that problem, and there are a few options (maybe more then 2?): 1.) Auto-detection, don't know i that is possible but I assume so. 2.) A 'pop-up' question so people will set the proper resolution. 3.) Use 1024x768 as default. Most people will have a minimum resolution like that allready, but it would still not be 'the end' and 'final solution' /me is checking SUSE Linux as a noob ATM and things like this are not noob-friendly. ps. cannot test if setup auto-detects cause of a bug that is allready reported. >> https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=157376 But seeing that option makes me assume it does not. Right. Can!=must.

That's unlikely.

Very unlikely. You would have to spend considerable efforts trying to get that slow refresh rates.

The screen resolution has been autodetected since years. And it worked for all of my beta installations on i386 and x86_64. I have different flat panels (1024x768, 1280x1024, 1400x1050 flat panel resolutions) and CRTs (mostly in either 1024x768 or 1600x1200) and the optimal resulution and refresh rate were always chosen. But the default is much higher then my screen supports....... I guess that the setup will use the setting you see....

make it 64 and we have a deal? ;-)

So the setup does not use the default setting from the bootscreen if it is not changed, or what?

As I said, I cannot test it at the moment, so this can be trash. But wanted to be sure before we reach beta8 cause that would be a bit late to come up with something like this. I had once the problem with YaST using a resolution that was far to high as default...once.... But the thing is that what 'was' does not mean that is works 'at this moment'. I mean I never had the -only vesa-problem before and now it suddenly occurs... But if auto-detection works well, then there is not problem at all. Will wait for the only-vesa-fix so I can check if it works at my older computer :) Azerion

But seeing that option makes me assume it does not.
It does if the hardware allows to. And it gives that option for people not liking the default of the hardware.
Maybe the option shown has to be 'auto' then so people are not confused choosing if the see the option in the screen? Azerion

It does seem to auto-detect at the moment... Most of my machines all choose 1280x1024 which is the default mode for the 17" TFT's I have. Just tried it on my 20.1" screen, it defaults to 1024x768, but there again 1680x1050 isn't a Vesa mode. My laptop has an Ati Mobility X700 chipset (which even ATi don't support properly yet :-( ), that does default to 800x600, but at least it installs. Once the installation is complete, X can't display anything, I have to boot into RL3 and install the ATi fglrx drivers before X starts. (Debian and Ubuntu "crash" before it has finished loading the set-up program (corrupted screen with random coloured pixels).) On my range of hardware it seems to be making sensible, and usable, choices. What hardware combination is causing a problem for you, that might be useful to know... nVidia FX5700LE, Dual Head 17" 1280x1024 TFT displays: defaults to 1280x1024 mirrored. nVidia FX5900XT, 17" 1280x1024 TFT: defaults to 1280x1024 nVidia Ti4600, 17" 1280x1024 TFT: defaults to 1280x1024 nVidia FX6600GT, 20.1" 1680x1050 widescreen TFT: defaults to 1024x768 (can manually choose 1400x1050) SiS chipset, 15" 1024x768 laptop TFT: defaults to 1024x768 Ati Radeon Mobility X700, 15.1" 1280x800 widescreen laptop TFT: defaults to 800x600 (Can't remember the chipset number of the SiS one, my mother nabbed the laptop and took it back to England with her last time she visited, she was sooo impressed with SUSE :-D) Dave -- "I got to go figure," the tenant said. Is that with 10.0 or 10.1? Good to know anyway. With the default set-up that YaST defines I just get a blank screen. Googling didn't bring any information on getting the Mobility X700 working with the radeon driver. Installing the fglrx and changing the driver name from radeon to fglrx booted with the otherwise default settings from YaST... Dave -- "I got to go figure," the tenant said. "We all got to figure. 10.1 beta6. It worked flawlessly with 10.0, but 10.1 needs above options.

Same here too. All X components are running, but display is black.
