While I am an end user, not a Linux Developer, I have contributed to the testing of openSUSE10.3. I have also had prior experience testing IBM system software. I found WHILE TESTING Alpha3-KDE install I could not select KDE3 in place of KDE4. You implied I could - "Why couldn't you go to 11.0 but stick to KDE 3.x " I simply asked you how. In this thread we were talking about ALPHA3 TESTING of openSUSE 11.0 on the FACTORY MAILING LIST so I fail to see why you raised the 'end user' label. Surely the point of COMMUNITY testing is to help produce a product that is ready for ALL users.
openSUSE is a community project, and much depends on volunteers there even if Novell is sponsoring very significant amounts of effort.
I am one of many people keen to help with Alpha/Beta testing. Absolutely. But the community (of which I'm also a member in my copious spare time, and of which some of my colleagues are part in some of their paid time) is who is doing and supporting this community testing, that's what I tried to indicate. All I tried to relay was that *I* cannot provide end user support and that I was traveling and did not have a test machine available to reproduce the scenario you were asking about. I'm honestly sorry that this did not come across properly. All that said: with the latest version of openSUSE that I had the chance to test recently, finally, the answer to your question is that you have to select the KDE4 desktop (or any other option, in fact) and then go in and also choose the KDE3 patterns. On the login dialog you can the choose which desktop to actually start, and should see KDE3 as an option in that case. With forthcoming snapshots/Betas, I believe this is going to change and KDE3 will be an option to choose more directly, but I haven't had the chance to see this in action with my own eyes yet (and actually don't where we are in terms of decision/design/implementation there). I hope others are going to fill in the blanks here. I hope others are going to fill in the blanks here. Yes, with Beta1 there will be during installation the possibillity to select between Gnome, KDE3 or KDE4. One thing to add just as I read the subject of the mail. With 11.0 there won't be KDE 4.1 available. Current release plan of KDE4.1 is heading in direction of mid/end of July. So 4.1 can't be included in the openSUSE 11.0 release. Best Michael
