RFC: turn off ppc32 and ppc64 big endian builds on openSUSE:Factory:PowerPC
by Dirk Müller 14 Sep '23
by Dirk Müller 14 Sep '23
14 Sep '23
Hi all,
recently I was made aware that openSUSE:Factory:PowerPC is quite a
large distribution as it is building for ppc 32bit, ppc64 big endian
and ppc64 little endian. in OpenQA as far as I know we are only
testing the ppc64 little endian builds.
Given the upcoming data center move and the lack of testing, are there
any concerns about turning off the builds for ppc 32bit and ppc64 big
endian? It would reduce build
power needs as well as disk storage /publishing bandwidth which is
shared with other distributions and architectures and becomes a
problem because of PowerPC being exceptionally large.
Thanks a lot in advance for any insight you can provide,
Greetings,
Dirk

## Richard (Aeon)
Has been battling with Aeon image builds in devel:microos:aeon and
devel:microos:aeon:images
Problems have included apparent breakage of SelfInstall images,
and lots of OBS publishing issues (most likely caused by current
storage issues)
Experiments with systemd-boot showed great promise, will be revisited
systemd-zram support implimented
automatic distrobox updates implimented
systemd-homed another shoot to try to implement this later today
rootless setup WIP
Experiments with alternate installation tooling (calamares?) is a
likely future plan
## Richard (ALP Architecture)
Results have been published
https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/factory@lists.opensuse.org/thread/…
and discussion on Reddit too
As a result of the poll, and the clear difference in community wishes
from SUSE's company direction, Richard will no longer be spending any
work time on the Leap Replacement topic.
Instead Richard will be spending more work time on Aeon and ALP 1:1
copies of SUSE's ALP products
## Bernhard (Slowroll)
Bernhard continued scripting https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Slowroll
Dominique: use branch instead of copypac then you'll not have issues
with release counters
## Max
Leap Micro
* Always faling while sync Leap Micro DVD to o3 at the rsync_iso stage,
there are a lot of bsdtar erros, after an investigation and talked to
Andrii, it was blocked by apparmor, Andrii changed apparmor permission,
should be fixed, verified with build35.1 at least
Leap 15.6
* build fail stats in SP6 Backports(x86_64): 36 failed 33 unresolvable
* pending requests: 387
* Re-enabled s390x build in SP6 Backports, we seem not to blocked by
s390x building resource anymore
* Blocked python310 packages from the medium, they were add to the
medium for some reason(typelib-1_0-Gtk-4_0 and typelib-1_0-Gtk-3_0 are
suspicious) but they're end up to be orphan package on the system
afterwards
* Forked libindi because of reanmed (lib)cfitsio-devel, and we can not
take Factory's version due to the dependencies can not fulfilled
* Preparing for a meta package updates
## Guillaume - Arm
Tumbleweed:
* Snapshot 20230911 blocked due to multiple bugs
* WIP to get Tumbleweed to run on Lenovo X13s
* shim currently not signed by Microsoft for aarch64 (Tumbleweed
only, Leap is fine). Stalled -
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1211297
Leap:
* 15.5: port for armv7: containers are currently not
building/created. Dirk mentioned that driver in 15.4 was the k3s team.
ALP:
* shim not signed by MS (at least for aarch64, not sure for x86_64)
- jsc#ARM-100
WSL:
* Works with x86 emulator since appx installer is x86-64, but this
is not really an issue since arm64 Win11 includes x86 emulator by
default.
Team is ok to publish it on Microsoft store anyway, but this would
require some testing in openQA which is now possible (WSL1 and WSL2)
thanks to Fabian https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/126083.
Steps documented on the wiki to install the appx from download.o.o:
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:WSL#With_Appx_from_openSUSE_download_server
lkocman: I will inform WSL team
## Sarah - s390x
Not available
Tumbleweed
* Releases are running again
-> data center move required together with old mainframe.
Data center move has been executed, but there are issues
Sarah's question: Is that the reason for disabling Backports for s390x?
Max: the reason is we're lack of s390x build power at this moment
Wolfgang: the date of the final move is unfortunatelly not fixed yet.
Physical installation issues such as network installation, and IBS/OBS
setup in PRG.
Definitely not before August.
Leap:
* sshfs is failing because no package availabe (s390x disabled for
building for Leap/Backports)
Package news:
* cmsfs was failing because of old kernel support -> updated
statement by the Upstream Maintainer:
History: back in the Linux 2.2 days, the CMSFS package included a
filesystem driver. The details varied depending on what release of the
kernel you were building against. But the FS driver fell out because
the author could not keep up with changes to kernel VFS. Eventually IBM
wrote a CMS filesystem driver, so the driver function in this package
became less needed and all of that logic fell into disrepair.
Forwarded to Linux Distributions Working Group -> Feedback by Fedora:
the cmsfs-fuse tool/driver provided by s390-tools project is replacing
the functionality provided by the cmsfs project's tools

Leap 15.4 / 15.5 users massively hit by libwebkit2gtk issue (visible
e.g. in evolution)
recent libwebkit2gtk update did not fix all of the issues. We wait for
GNOME team to release a next update soon.
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1213858
Security issue in libwebp package, this library is included in Chrome
and Firefox.
libzypp update in 15.5 was fixed by releasing missing dependency.
libzypp issue that can be properly addressed only with respin of DVD.
See section above for more details.
openQA is OK currently. (snapper was fixed)
Some 15.5 updates from between freeze and GA need to be released, WIP
for Marcus
Leap 15.4 is working
Leap Micro 5.3 is working
Leap Micro 5.4 testing is now passing as well
Leap 16.0 - we should revisit the update/sle repo as the current setup
not exactly mirror friendly. Solutions could be dropping not so popular
architectures or split repositories per architecture.
## Adrian - OBS

"Virtual" server room migration to PRG seemed to work well. Only some
minor issues remains.

Hi there,
I'm submitting openssl-pkcs11-sign-provider to Factory:
https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/1110899
This submission is based on IBM request (Jira PED-4403), they would like to have
this package in ALP.
openSSL 3.0 replaces the engine plugin framework by a provider plugin frame
work. Even though the engine framework shall remain as a deprecated framework in
openSSL 3.0, Linux distributions may build openSSL without engine support.
Therefore a restricted PKCS #11 provider is required that supports signing
operations via PKCS #11 for existing keys reference by an PKCS #11 object URI.
The openssl-pkcs11-sign-provider has been release in the upstream repository on
github (v1.0.0, [1]).

Dear Package maintainers and hackers.
Below package(s) in openSUSE:Factory have had problems for at
least 4 weeks. We tried to send out notifications to the
configured bugowner/maintainers of the package(s), but so far no
fix has been submitted. This probably means that the
maintainer/bugowner did not yet find the time to look into the
matter and he/she would certainly appreciate help to get this
sorted.
- hcode: Fails to build
- iredis: Fails to build
- mgp: Fails to build
- python3-espressomd: Fails to build
- uim: Fails to build
- v2ray-core: Fails to build
- vim-plugins: Fails to build
Unless somebody is stepping up and submitting fixes, the listed
package(s) are going to be removed from openSUSE:Factory.
Kind regards,
DimStar / Dominique Leuenberger <dimstar(a)opensuse.org>

Version update (253.8 -> 254.3)

- Import commit b6b4e5a8a82d1f13f265a4ef170f2d13be82789a (merge of v254.3)
For a complete list of changes, visit:
https://github.com/openSUSE/systemd/compare/1f73719d67b9300c6bb75232d695d03…
- Make utmp support per project configureable [jsc#PED-3144]
- Make apparmor and selinux per project configureable [jsc#PED-2736]
- systemd.spec: don't use build conditionals (%bcond_with/%bcond_without) with
the mini flavor to make sure that all the features remain disabled for this
flavor regardless of what is enabled in the prjconf.
- Don't build systemd-doc with the mini flavor
- Explicitly require group(lp) by udev: this used to be provided by
system-group-hardware, but with the introduction of
system-user-lp (and systemd-users auto-generating groups) is now
actually provided by system-user-lp. Latest versions of
system-group-hardware clean this up and no longer also provide
this group.
- Fix incorrect option name when calling pam-config for systemd-homed
- testsuite: Recommend selinux-policy-devel instead of requiring it in line with
other tests. Add Recommends for selinux-policy-targeted as this is also
required to run the test (in general any SELinux policy should do)
- systemd.spec: add journal translations to lang package
- Import commmit 1f73719d67b9300c6bb75232d695d03410991098
1f73719d67 test-mountpoint-util: /root might be mounted
a391ba4a8f test: testsuite-35.sh needs manual/test-session-properties to be installed on SUSE
- Upgrade to v254.1 (commit 208a21833b6953a2517a6c3f8f4849c6664b01be)

It seems like there is a problem with new builds being published.
TW build 20230907 is over 1 day old and it was never published, and
20230908 is 15 hours old and it has not been published.
Looking at the stats for those builds it does not appear like there were
any major issues that I can see.
