-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello all, As you might know, i am allways trying new hardware with SuSE, (after first installing XP, and the firmware.(mobo-drivers) I look at the speed of windows, and get immediately annoyed by the endless updates.., the anti-spyware, virusscanner, firewall, because if you start with XP SP1, there is no firewall, and before you are able to install the protection, dataminers are allready mining.. :-( (With other words, it takes much much longer to install a 'complete' windows than a complete SuSE, and is less than half as enjoyable. ;-) (I did not try Vista, so i can not compare it..but don't let us spoil the fun!!) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Than the real Fun begins: I format the disk, - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (to get rid of Windows, is allready feeling good..) I DO NOT WANT TO OFFEND ANYBODY. IT IS JUST MY OPINION, AND I AM ENTITLED TO HAVE AN OPINION, SO ALL OF YOU...: (restecp: Ali G in da House) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- And then: Start fresh with SuSE... (feels just great to have no windows onboard!!!, finaly got rid of it :-) And installing SuSE is happily grinning...Real Fun. Very smooth, and beautifull from start to end, without firmware, working perfect, (hardware detection is realy allmost perfect...except 3D on onboard g-cards..) This is just great! (got a retail DVD as a gift for helping Debug a little, that just feels very good!) Inserting the DVD, and you're OK..> here we GO! You can configure just about everything you want!!! (tried LVM this time, very simple and cool..) When you are completely happy, you start to install... All pkgs you have choosen are visible while installing: great, love that! (it is not bad to have to install some codecs lateron...) Than fine-tuning the sys as far as possible, ...downloading some nice icons from paolinoland.it, a nice splash from Sean Parsons, some nice wallpapers for the 8 desktops, adjusting the window'dressing', and.....allright. I realy love it! I think if the way and time to update is worked out completely, it is the best Linux distro around... ( and i have tried and use(d) several..) from one, allmost satisfied user ;-) - -- Have a nice day, M9. Now, is the only time that exists. openSUSE is focusing on native software management by using YaST and libzypp, the package management library. ZENworks Linux Management is Novell's solution for enterprise-class resource management for desktops and servers. ZENworks components are fully available and supported for SUSE Linux Enterprise based products and not longer part of the openSUSE distribution. Product development for both ZENworks and SUSE Linux Enterprise concentrates on continued interoperability solutions for remote and local software management. You have to make a start-up disk, regular, and make a back-up from the old bios first. But if you look around, there will be easy readme's coming with the flash-utility, so there will not be a problem. Just look for your mainboard, and find the updates from the vendor. Are you talking about patches present in a repo different from the one a hypothetical update was detected? Is it seriously discriminating if such patches are detected only on opensuse-updaters next round of source-refreshes? I downloaded openSUSE-10.3-Alpha2_Alpha3-DVD-i386.delta.iso. but very unsure what it is. When I go to burn it, k3b tells me it is not an iso9660 file. Hey Group; I am involved with a older system with a SIS 530/620 on board video system. Yes, miserable! The problem is that any SuSE from a boxed set 10.1 to current 10.3.Aplha# fail during booting from CD #1 just about the point at which /dev/udev is showing on the screen. It locks up the whole unit. To rescue this system I have resorted to Fedora Core 6 and it is working at this point. I tried with SuSE at the boot menu to select VESA and TEXT modes plus failsafe. Nothing worked It appears SuSE's udev is unable to setup a dev console/tty#. The screen goes black and the keyboard is dead. Hi, bug 264685 (Get rid of package locks in package manager) asks for reasoning of and better concepts for locking packages in the package manager. This mail should be a kickoff to define a common understanding and concept for package locks. Package locks try to provide a solution for the following use-cases 1. Distribution upgrade with 3rd party packages Desktop user Joe has purchased a full featured version of the FooBar application from vendor ACME for openSUSE 10.2 The new openSUSE 10.3 distribution contains a free version of FooBar, based on open source, built in autobuild with vendor 'openSUSE', with limited functionality. Upgrade of the distribution replaces the full featured version with the limited one. 2. Maintenance upgrade of 3rd party packages Multimedia junkie Susan likes to listen to mp3 encoded music files and regularly watches DVD movies on her laptop. Because of license issues, she installed mplayer from a 3rd party repository, including a full set of patented codec implementations. The openSUSE project provides a maintenance update for mplayer, fixing a critical security bug. This update replaces the installed mplayer, resulting in a version with limited functionality. The current solution to the above scenarious is to group packages based on their vendor attribute. Packages from unknown vendors are auto-protected in order to prevent unwanted replacements. This is a very effective but also very limited solution. Proposals anyone ? In tomorrow's meeting, we'd like to discuss the following topics. Note these are just brief remarks, if you do not understand what I mean, ask me. Please give me your input - and if you have stuff that we should discuss, please tell us as well. * log entries in .changes file Just a simple "Update to version x.y" is not valid in the packages changelog but happens far too often. Goal: present the changes done to packages to users in a good way and use that for e.g. Release Notes. * Autofs5 instead of autofs4? It was suggested to move from autofs4 to autofs5. * Smaller systems - what can be done? There are many requests for smaller systems. The minimal install is a first step. The BASE project in the build service has cleaned up many dependencies and spec files so that systems might have a smaller footprint. Is there anything else that can be done? * Updating openSUSE: What options do users have for updating from one release to the next one? Which of these will we support? Some current options: - Boot from CD - zypper update - System Update * Update of Printing * NM enabling scripts followup - ntp * Moving languages out of packages followup: The idea is to add to spec file of packages a new rpm macro so that subpackages are created and then related subpackages are repacked for each language in our build system. This way we would get e.g. basesystem-$lang and gnome-$lang packages and those can then be installed. Still using alpha2+. When I run zypper update it tells me: A ZYpp transaction is already in progress but if I try to see the process, there is none. What am I doing wrong? Something strange has happened. "There are no installable providers of /usr/bin/iconv for a2ps-4.13-1126.i586[20070302-011355] # rpm -qf /usr/bin/iconv glibc-2.5-41 (i686) # rpm -qf `which a2ps` a2ps-4.13-1125 (i586) (ditto) /usr/sbin/glibc_post_upgrade for glibc-2.5-42-i686 Factory says they should be i586 since 15/04/07 - looks like something in factory was screwed previously.
