Sorry, no 'kiddie-winks' here either... There's no way I'm loading a HTML page to look up alleged virus information from an unknown source! (or forward emails of apparent infections. We all get viruses from time to time - there is no need to forward this kind of useless information amongst the group).
Hi,
Just a warning,
We received LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU virus today.
Fortunately, the person who got it was wise enough to delete it on site - not a kiddy-wink!

So, just how does this virus even attack Linux??
I would have thought if it was a Windows virus it would have no
business even being on a Schools Linux mailing list - IMHO.

I presume the business would come from the fact that some of us aren't using
Linux 24/7. And some of us might even be using Outlook Express to read our
e-mail...........

I wish I *did* get to use Linux 24/7, but even so Outlook is banned
from our internal network, there are really good free alternatives
even for commercial use. It's just my opinion that a mailing list
called linux-uk-schools should be just that - related to providing
help and information about the installation and use of Linux within
the academic community.
There are plenty of links for security and virus info from well
established sites like www.freshmeat.net or www.zdnet.co.uk,
although as always, I feel that if there is a vunerability within Linux,
then info should be distributed to Linux mailing lists.

We have no problem with MS software, and it is used through out as it is
felt that compatibility with a student's home system is extremely important.
We use SuSE with our more advanced sixth formers, and as training tool. Or
at least, we try to. Which is why we are on this list......

It's not as if those who choose to run it havn't had plenty of warning...
even for commercial use. It's just my opinion that a mailing list called linux-uk-schools should be just that - related to providing help and information about the installation and use of Linux within the academic community.
