RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] ADSL speeds into school
As a matter of interest, ours (will be, pending v23.4.3.5.... approval) is self sustaining, based on a school subscription to services. But then we're using a JANet link and filtering at the school level using evolved Powys type boxes. Reduces the costs significantly (while improving performance, manageability and cost of upgrade). -----Original Message----- From: Richard Rothwell To: 'suse-linux-uk-schools@suse.com ' Sent: 5/12/03 2:16 PM Subject: RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] ADSL speeds into school I cannot imagine _anyone_ being prepared to use the BGfL (Birminghan) as their only internet connection! If filters are extreme - to the point of stupidity... You cannot access on-line bank accounts, slashdot was filtered for weeks before our screaming was heard, I could go on... I guess this cuts to the point that when this Government money runs out, then these local GfL's are going to have to become very competative, very quickly. Anyone up for a small wager?
I think that ALL schools (and libraries) should act as local community wireless nodes.

A direct connection from UKERNA, far too sensible, they know what they are doing :)

The Uni of Liverpool have been talking about putting wifi into the Guild and Libraries but IIRC one of the things (hopefully temporarily) stopping them is that you must agree to an agreement before you can use JANET. - -- Cheers, Chris Howells -- chris@chrishowells.co.uk, howells@kde.org Web: http://chrishowells.co.uk, PGP ID: 33795A2C KDE: http://www.koffice.org, http://printing.kde.org, http://usability.kde.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+wQWHF8Iu1zN5WiwRAhX4AKCLajTAVHfl8JCiX4efuzP+bKmqpACfTEls XeFXKmHggF06r84KeI+tobE= =JXtS -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
