Sparkle modem ?, Linux User Mandrake 9.2
Dear All I've just got a sparkle speedcom+ intel 56k fax modem v.92 I want to replace my US Robotics win modem so that it is worthwhile to put Linux on my home machine and run it with XP (sorry) Will the sparkle one work? What do you think of the Mandrake 9.2 off Linux Format for the purpose? I looked up the 9.2 on web and it talked about loads of patches etc. As you might realise (especially if youre not too clever - I have only got a 56k transfer - so laoding off net is slow derrr slow) I think Linux User has got a Unix OS - how difficult is that? (that might be a impossible answer) Thanks for your time and advice Ron Johnson ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends? Dear All
Hello.
I've just got a sparkle speedcom+ intel 56k fax modem v.92 I want to replace my US Robotics win modem so that it is worthwhile to put Linux on my home machine and run it with XP (sorry) Will the sparkle one work?
I want to perform heart surgery, do you think I will be successful?

This kind of support comes from the kernel, so it doesn't matter which distro you use, as long as your kernel has the relevant modules loaded, etc.
I think Linux User has got a Unix OS - how difficult is that? (that might be a impossible answer)
What exactly is your question then? Do you want help configuring your modem? If so, I would suggest: wvdial HTH, Thomas Adam ===== "The Linux Weekend Mechanic" -- http://linuxgazette.net "TAG Editor" -- http://linuxgazette.net ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends? Ron, I've just bought SuSE 9... It's very easy to configure hardware with. Not sure about the modem you mention, but in terms of smooth install and config, you could do a lot worse. But then (apparently - so I'm told) I switch distros every week. -- Matt ;) ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends? If your looking for your first distribution to try which seems to be the case I can recommend the linux emporium (http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk) as a good source of cheap cd's. You should be able to get a distribution for about the same price as a cover cd. They also do update cd's to save you having to download all those patchs. -- Simon Kelsall.
