Under 11s (was: Thinking ahead)
Also for the under 11s, This is a known weakness
Definately a problem, as the younger years and early years are much more likely to be wanting multimedia etc which is usually only for Windows or Macs. (although linuxforkids.org.uk and debian Jr help quite a bit here ...) Having said that, nearly all of my families CDs run on win 3.11 - so must try them under Wine ... Again though - only a problem if you want to be completely Linux, and as is showing through from the discussions, this would be quite a way off yet :-) Kevin.

The most likely annoyance is if they contain code to check for a CD drive. Unless the WiNE people have managed to solve this problem now. -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763

I'd certainly recommend a look at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-jr/packaged for anyone who hasn't already. The debian-jr project is "educational" in the broader sense - i.e. it is deliberately not focused around the needs of schools. However many of the packages listed are extremely suitable for use in primary/preparatory schools. There is some overlap with the software on the http://www.linuxforkids.org/ site mentioned. Has a write up of Monday appeared lately? I may have missed it as I'm only skimming the list whilst snowed under at work :-( - Richard Smedley btw to those who are (reasonably enough) suggesting that there is resistance to moving away from what parents and others believe pupils will encounter in the "real" world (i.e. proprietary software): As has been mentioned before - are schools about training or *education* ? ------------------------------- This mail was sent using ecmail
