Hi. I'm new to the list so forgive me if the following topics have been covered. We use Suse for our school server software with W95/98 as the client software. We log on as if it were an NT server using Samba and use Webmin to carry out admin tasks. Apache, Squid and WWWoffle are used to connect to the outside world and so far only a couple of problems which I would appreciate some help/ advice : Printing - I am using a linux box as a printserver but could do with some way of controlling/deleting multiple print requests and other printing problems. You know what its like, a pupil presses print, waits 5 millisecs and then repeats the procedure until the bell goes. In old money there was a DOS utility which controlled print queues for Novell printservers. Is there an equivalent in Linux ? Password -there is a facility in Webmin to make passwords expire. It speaks of warning days and expiry days etc but I can't get it to work. Is there a utility which I can put on which will force everyone to change their password as they log on (from within Windows?) without giving them access to Webmin (security problem there ) Colin Davies Meadows School Chesterfield

Do you really need to expire passwords? Lots of people here can't remember their own password, let alone remember lots of them or guess someone else's. I heard some years ago of a site where password changes were forced every month, so users chose a password of the form xxxxxJan, xxxxxFeb and so on. Where changes are forced I suspect most users oscillate between two forms, or as many as are held in their password histories. If I had indefinite password changes I think I'd just use my current password with an incrementing count. Some passwords here have not changed in seventeen years. -- Christopher Dawkins, Felsted School, Dunmow, Essex CM6 3JG 01371-820527 or 07798 636725 cchd@felsted.essex.sch.uk

does webmin not ask for a password? should you not be allowing access to webmin from certain computers? with apache you can edit a directive in httpd.conf called AllowOverride. Change defualt line to read AllowOverride AuthConfig. Now you can put a .htaccess to control access (using passwords if required).eg. /usr/local/apache/htdocs/webmin/.htaccess - or wherever webmin is installed. have a look here for details http://faq.clever.net/htaccess.htm hth
hi all I'm currently running through the Webmin modules, in that i am trying to use it as the sole tool for configuring a LAN server for a school, based on the K12Linux distribution (its Redhat-based). Couple of things i have alreasdy noticed: - that the Webmin main user will default to the root user name password for the login and default to port 10000, using the RPM from www.webmin.org, both things you may want to consider changing for your local system (?). - that (i think)that SWAT and the Samba module conflict with setup info, it seemed to be that case with the workgroup name - that the User / Group module could may do with a bit of tweaking for school usage.... which leads into a possible project, Webmin i think has potential for remote school admin, mainly because of its multi OS support (except WinNT...shame:-), continued development outside education. However it does possibly need some module development....? any thoughts?
