Re: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Re: laptops for all
GCSE and 6th form only - about 100-150 pupils and 50 staff - we were
looking at about 20 spares (using the 10% rule & given the usual
turn-around on repairs) - and possibly hot spares for HDD and display.
The lossage through theft/damage was the main sticking point, and was the
reason for not going with leased systems - staff/parental insurance would
cover systems owned outright more reliably than most leasing companies who
are geared for business users, not students!
The question is, however, becoming academic (pun intended), since many of
our students are acquiring laptops of their own. Almost all of our boarders
have brought computers with them from home.

snip . . . Has anyone on the list looked at or tried the special leasing schemes for schools/parents? Some of the schools in this county are looking at the idea very seriously. The scheme from ABK looks good with all hardware support issues taken care of (theoretically). There is still a gap re software support though. The company have promised to let me know about providing Linux systems (or other OS). ____________________________________ Giles Nunn - Network Manager Carms Schools ICT Development Centre Tel: +44 01239 710662 Fax: 710985 ____________________________________
