[opensuse-doc] How about including some books with openSUSE ?
hi Susers ! There are some great free books lying around, included with some OSS distributions: Those are technical books, such as "Rute" Linux tutorial, and philosophical books such as "The cathedral and the bazaar". I think it would be smart to include those two as RPMs in main repository. (or on the media itself) What do you think? -Alexey Eremenko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

Yes, that's a good idea. You can find already three packages (OpenOffice Essential, Producing OSS, RELAX NG) in my repository: http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/thomas-schraitle/openSUSE_10.2/r... we already have a package included on the openSUSE distribution called "books": ---------------------------- Several Linux Books This package contains some books, which are installed under /usr/share/doc/Books. The books are: * "Linux Installation and getting started" by Matt Welsh * "Linux Programmers Guide" by Sven Goldt and Sven van der Meer * "Linux Network Administrators Guide, Second Edition" by Olaf Kirch and Terry Dawson * "Linux System Administrators Guide" by Lars Wirzenius * "Linux Users Guide" by Larry Greenfield * "Linux Kernel 2.4 Internals" by Tigran Aivazian * "The Linux Kernel Module Programming Guide" by Ori Pomerantz ---------------------------- toms, this package is maintained by Rudi. You should probably talk to him and ask him whether he is willing to include the books you have just packaged. Apart from that, there are a few websites dedicated to listing free documentation available for Linux - maybe it is sufficient to link there from the LfL project page: FreeTechBooks.com http://www.freetechbooks.com/forum-7.html LinuxHQ http://www.linuxhq.com/guides/index.html O'Reilly http://www.oreilly.com/openbook/ -- Regards Frank Frank Sundermeyer, SUSE LINUX GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuernberg Tel: +49-911-74053-0, Fax: +49-911-7417755; http://www.novell.com/ "Reality is always controlled by the people who are most insane" Dogbert --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

I know that some books have been packages, but I would like to extend this list with some more books (preferably in HTML format). Can someone talk to "Rudi", or drop here his email, so I could contact him? Adding "Grokking The GIMP" might be good addition as well. -Alexey Eremenko --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

I've contacted him. However, the books package, maintained by Rudi is more Linux related (Frank posted the contents.) If you would like to see other documentation I prefer it to be in different packages. This has the advantage that you don't have to install bulky documentation that you are not interested in. :)
Adding "Grokking The GIMP" might be good addition as well.
That is an option. I can add more documentation to the openSUSE build server in the future, however it has a less priority on my list at the moment. OK, very nice. I think it is OK to separate each book into a different RPM package. But I have a problem with the "SUSE Build Server" -- those packages doesn't go on the DVD, therefore it requires an Internet connection. I have computers not connected the net. I need a documentation that's available offline, on the DVD. You might tell me that DVD is limited to 4.5GB so you can't include everything - so I would respond "Look at the future: Blue-Rays are on horizon with 25GB+ capacity." This is why I push the LfL project forward BTW. -Alexey Eremenko --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

Right. I am just started to get used to the openSUSE build server last year. But I intend to move important or needed doc packages to our internal Autobuild for being included in our release (if it's possible.) Do you have some special documentation that you want to see as RPM package on DVD (apart from GIMP)? (Keep in mind there is limited space on a DVD.)

Isn't it appr. 9GB because it's a double layer DVD?

Yes, and we are happy with your contributions. :) Bye, Tom -- Thomas Schraitle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX GmbH >o) Documentation Specialist Maxfeldstrasse 5 /\\ 90409 Nuernberg _\_v http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation_Team --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

1. Well, there is an excellent command-line tutorial (made by Mandrake), which really helped me to start learning the command-line. It's very useful. This Book is really *unique*, because it's the only-one I know which is easy to read and understand for beginners. As a bonus this book is relatively up-to-date (2004 updated, so it's relevant) I would like to either include it, or rewrite it and then include it. I don't know, however, if Novell will allow such a move. Links: http://www.mandriva.com/en/community/resources/documentation http://doc.mandrivalinux.com/MandrakeLinux/101/en/Command-Line.html/ If Novell agrees, (+ I could get the sources) + license is acceptable, I could try to modify it, to better correlate to SUSE Linux. Actually, what's need edit is the removal of Mandrake trademarks, as the text is great. But I might need some help from community. AFAIK: Mandriva dropped this book. 2. "Rute" in another excellent (but very old) book about Linux command-line - for Advanced Linux Users. (this book, unfortunately wasn't updated for a very long time, so some chapters are outdated, last updated 2002) link: http://rute.2038bug.com/rute.html.gz But the Rute books covers a lot more aspects of Linux in a lot more detail than other books, so I would include it. 3. maybe Rebecca is right about not including the GIMP book (outdated). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

I found "Grokking the GIMP" very helpful for users that already know GUI, but missing details of implemented functions. I had newer book from local library that is more accurate considering GUI and didn't impressed me much with content. -- Regards, Rajko. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

Comming up with 10.1 we could create "Add-on CDs". So perhaps we can evaluate a list of packages which can be added to such an Add-on CD or DVD comming out of the build service. I don't think that this CD or DVD will make it in the boxed version - but having such a thing for download is perhaps an alternative? If so, please begin and create a list of packages (and patterns) which can be added to such a CD or DVD and discuss this on our factory mailinglist...

Are you shure that this wouldn't be HD-DVD? ;-) But I don't think we've enough "whatever"-DVD Players installed in Computers for 10.3... That's interesting. Do you have some info about those "Add-on CDs" ? links plz.

I don't know what we have in our "SUSE Build Severs" so I can't select from it. I do know, however, which Software I would like to see included on the Add-On CDs.

It might be - 15 GB isn't bad at all either.
But I don't think we've enough "whatever"-DVD Players installed in Computers for 10.3...
Of course we won't have enough by 10.3. But Documentation in general and LfL in particular aims to be a long-standing project, aimed to exist in the next-decade future, so I thinking now about openSUSE project's next step. -Alexey Eremenko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

Unless they've rewritten it to reflect the new UI, I wouldn't bother with this one. The UI has changed so much that it will be very hard to follow for inexperienced users even though it does contain lots of cool stuff about image manipulation. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org
