[opensuse-doc] I would like to copy and modify Mandrake Docs into LfL
hi susers ! There is an excellent command-line intro guide for Linux newbies from Mandrake 10.1. I would like to copy and modify it's contents into LfL. What's the best way to do that? The problem is licensing, it's not GFDL, and Mandriva doesn't want to make it GFDL. Should I write all the material from scratch? link: http://www.mandriva.com/fr/community/resources/documentation This docs is SUPER-DUPER important, because newbies don't know the concept of mounting or how-to install software from sources. This book cover all the concepts/basics. Any ideas? Writing from scratch may take years to accomplish... -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org

Copying verbatim is never an option. Especially not when the licensing is the problem.
What's the best way to do that?
As said above, there is no way of doing that.

Probably - but what exactly is it that strikes you as so important and unique about the Mandrake doc? I just see a bunch of manuals there and don't quite get what it is you want for LfL.

Instead of re-inventing the wheel twice you could do the following: 1) check the openSUSE docs, especially the Start-up Guide and use Bugzilla to report what is missing. I don't see much added value in having some sort of stub in the doc delivered by Novell, yet another stub in the LfL manual and another bit outside in the community. 2) Share with the list what particular issues you think need coverage and we can decide together whether that is something that counts as an enhancement to the existing SUSE/Novell doc or whether that is something we want do develop in LfL. 3) write a primer on what you think is lacking for LfL and link to the Mandrake stuff Jana -- Jana Jaeger jjaeger@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH Documentation Maxfeldstr. 5 +49 (0) 911 74053-0 D-90409 Nuernberg http://www.novell.com/linux SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg)

openSUSE documentation (start-up guide) structure is incorrect and it lacks a lot in Part II. openSUSE documentation does explain: (start-up guide) -ls -vi (lacks link to vimtutor, should be added to section 8.7.1) -cd -mkdir -rmdir -su -touch -find -locate -redirection & pipes -cp -mv -chmod -chown But again, Mandrake has few examples of each command versus one in SUSE, which can be difficult for newbie to get into and understand. openSUSE documentation does not explain: (start-up guide) -archiving with tar -job control in bash -hardlinks and softlinks -process control (ps, kill, killall, top, nice, renice, ...) -building and installing Free Software (from .tar.gz) -runlevels (very poor explanation in SUSE) Those are important things explained very well in Mandrake Docs. Optional components not explained in Mandrake either: -mc -screen anything important else, that I missed ? -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-doc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-doc+help@opensuse.org
ahh and yes: I would like to participate in writing those.
