[opensuse-buildservice] OBS book writing
after multiple people asked for OBS books and were willing to join in writing them we set up the necessary infrastructure for writing them. Please read the announcement here: http://news.opensuse.org/2011/01/18/obs-books-project/ The goals of these books are described as follows atmn and are open for discussion here: This book is part of the official openSUSE Build Server documentation. These books are considered to be reviewed and edited to be the reference documentation of OBS. These books are not considered to be focused on a special OBS version. They are also not a replacment of the documentation inside of the openSUSE wiki. But content from the wiki may get consolidated and included in these books. Furthermore these books get written by the OBS community, please check the chapter how to work on these books. We request esp. experienced users and administrators to join and to contribute to these books. It is not required to be a very good or even native english speaker, because we built on community editors to improve the language. My personal plan is to write on the history and general architecture chapters in next weeks. Please speak up here if you want to write also some parts. Everything is welcomed atm. And if something is incorrect (technical or language) we will peer review it and fix it as second step. Also other projects using OBS are welcomed to host their site specific documentation in our svn. In that way we can work together on one book suitable for everybodys instance hopefully. Also parts which are specific to the build.o.o instance will be marked and can be supressed by others. bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH email: adrian@suse.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

I am interested in writing documentation about OBS and kernel module packages. Specific topics: - build.novell.com vs. build.o.o vs. private OBS instance: What is the difference w/ respect to building kernel module packages? Which should a developer choose? - how to use single source to build kernel module packages for multiple distros. Some is covered in http://www.novell.com/communities/node/9226/using-opensuse-build-service-cre... but it needs to be updated and expanded. - any other specific OBS config stuff for building kernel module packages Thx, Ann -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

That is great, I have added a chapter template for you for the best practice guide. Please get an berlios account and mail me your account name, so I can add you to the committers. thanks adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH email: adrian@suse.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org
Hello there again.
I will start writing about package formats: .rpm and .deb. I will also
search about how to extend the support to other package formats.
Hopefully I will find something usefull...
Generally there is good documentation in the wiki but it's really
scattered to various places. It was about time for such an effort to
organize it. Well done!
Best regards,

regarding the Buildservice book - what a brilliant initiative. If anyone wishes to contribute but is concerned about their English, I am happy to help with editing your writing. I would be happy to add you to the committers list. So you can also peer review our broken english commits and fix it directly :) thanks adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH email: adrian@suse.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org
In my experience most openSUSE people have more correct English than mine - (Australian :) ) - so I don't expect much will be required - but in case I can occasionally help, do go ahead and add me. Helen

Would like to contribute some parts for this project. Think I could write OBS installation parts. Specific topics : - OBS install using OBS appliance. - OBS install in OpenSUSE and SLES using YaST - OBS setup and test build for the 1st time. Indeed these are well described in Build Service portal and README file. Think I could explain it more kind way and add some tips for the 1st time user. Best regards, YS Jang

That's great news. May I suggest, when there's some free time, to look at the Mallard format instead of Docbook. See http://projectmallard.org/about/learn/ It's similar to Docbook, but it's easier to write, which might help to get some more contributors. Just a suggestion; it's already awesome to have the current documents! I (and our team in Nokia) would certainly be interested in supporting this An area I'm especially interested in (related to chapter 10) would be "OBS operations". This would probably cover: * distributed deployment (complements 10.1. Server Components) * monitoring * backup / restore * performance and then * Administration David (lbt on berlios too) -- "Don't worry, you'll be fine; I saw it work in a cartoon once..." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

Great, you have been added. Please note there is already a "meego" tag which you might add as os="meego" attribute for MeeGo specific parts. Or you may want to introduce also a "nokia" one. thanks adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH email: adrian@suse.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org
