[opensuse-buildservice] OBS Logo
Hello All! I made a new logo for the OBS [1]. The second variant in the PNG is mainly for cases like e.g. ads, banners, etc. Where the logo is small/tiny. Agree with both opinions. Maybe a picture of a shiny skyscraper being built that looks modern and cool would be a nice starting point for an OBS Logo Robert -- Robert Schweikert MAY THE SOURCE BE WITH YOU SUSE-IBM Software Integration Center LINUX Tech Lead rjschwei@suse.com rschweik@ca.ibm.com 781-464-8147 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

I agree that the tone was not helpful and immediately contributed to degradation of a thread that was meant to be collaborative. Let's not slamp people when they offer up their ideas or end-works. Let's learn to speak more constructively.

From a marketing perspective, let's not forget also that OBS is not just a community project tool but also a product with commercial offerings. So it needs to be a logo that appeals both to community and enterprise audiences.
The factory image is conceptually cool. But the design of it is way too similar to several other companies I can think of that use that concept. I do agree that we should retain that "factory concept" but be a bit bolder in how it is portrayed. The glass-skyscraper type concept seems to be a very good one and is attractive enough to turn heads if displayed in a booth at some events. As for text font, I'd like to see us be consistent with using FifthLeg wherever possible, but that's only a wish, not an insistence. :-) Bryen M Yunashko

I don't have a company logo with a factory in mind, maybe you could provide a link or source? So I could get some more inspiration?

I'm going to play with the glas effect and more colours. The main reason why I picked the Blue was the assosiation of this colour with technical thinks, blueprints, etc. But I know that I have a light tendency to shady colors and not every one is sharing this passion ;-)

I got the order to make something not openSUSE like, as its now the "open" build service. Have a good time! Robert

Being constructive: You ask me if I like your shoes, I say "No they are ugly". What is the problem the tone, it seems to me the problem is that a few people like to pound others whenever they disagree, and even promote some kind of hypocrite stance to make them look like hostile. Furthermore, the comment had a few truth's, that YOU as a Marketing professional should be aware if you really understand anything at all about Marketing, starting with cultural adaptation of a product (which includes the Fifth Leg font you mention bellow, which is known to have problem with cyrillic support, a concern already subject to bug reports from the russian speaking community). So, just a quick question: * Why do some people like to take everything that is said on the negative side and not focus on the positive?
From a marketing perspective, let's not forget also that OBS is not just a community project tool but also a product with commercial offerings. So it needs to be a logo that appeals both to community and enterprise audiences.
From a marketing perspective, segmentation exists for a purpose. Think it over and decide what is the main role. You can neither please trojans and greeks at the same time.
As for text font, I'd like to see us be consistent with using FifthLeg wherever possible, but that's only a wish, not an insistence. :-)
I quote from the contribution you tried to bash down, which is one of the most basic facts in Marketing: * "The font isn't readable and anyway it's a logo and probably shouldn't have that" The problem goes beyond this with: * The font is no longer maintained by Steiner; * The font was subject to bug reports from members of the Russian speaking community in which point to the lack of Cyrillic Glyphs. * A font that has known problems with cultural adaptation shouldn't be used for branding; My thing is that Fifth Leg should actually be dropped from any branding, including openSUSE because honestly, it's not a font for the future, it's something from the past. I think the logo must be usable also outside of Bento. It will be used in many other web sites and presentations. So, it should be remarkable when sitting between some other logo's. A colored and a bw version of it would be nice therefore. thanks adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH email: adrian@suse.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

That was, what I had in mind when I picked the font. The OBS is an IT tool. And I wanted to give it a kind of game-character. So that it looks more like fun then like serious hard business.

Robert et al,
Regarding the logo from the initial mail there's a few things I
like... I'm not sure if they were intended by Robert but here's what I
think:
* Number 3 - The most visible aspect of the logo are the "3" collumns
for me. Number "3" has several meanings across cultures and is free of
"negative charge" for the most... for example, number three is
associated with:
- invoking expression;
- versatility;
- joy of creativity.
The number three is a time identifier for "Past", "Present" and
"Future". "Three's" in people's lifes are often associated with the
need of expressing yourself as a creative person, or consider present
directional path in relation to past events and future goals. Three
typically symbolizes reward and success in the most undertakings.
For the most, I see the "three collumns" as a very distinctive and
favorable identifier on the logo, it does place some positive thing.
Color: My monitor calibration brings up a strange tone of blue/grey on
the logo... It's know that many artists use blue to show perspective,
blue is often associated with truth, spirit and peace. The grey is
associated with maturity and security (also with sorrow).
Personally the colors are nice if you see OBS, though I believe they
should be a bit more flashy and not look so 'dead'.
About the logo itself, it has a good visual metaphore if you already
know OBS, but for people which do not know OBS, that metaphore can be
hard to achieve. I wouldn't associated software building/development
with the civil engineering. I would rather associate it with an 'act
of creation' than just socketing bricks into a wall. If we're talking
about creating the right color would be Red (passion, creation).
Another thing on the logo is the fact that it has too much sharp
shapes, this makes people focus on the logo and our brain will try to
gather up a meaning for those shapes, this will eventually lead to
people getting tired of seeing the logo. I would probably try
something a bit more abstract if something has to be changed and use
less sharpen shapes.
I wouldn't use text at all for the logo, it simplifies cultural
adaptation and gives more focus on the logo by not stealing the
spotlight. If the logo is a good visual metaphore you don't need text
for it ;)
My 2 cents, worth for whatever they are worth, which is, nothing.
NM
