[Bug 504588] New: Feature Request: Do not block hardware related NIC-settings for network devices, when NetworkManager is chosen
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=504588 Summary: Feature Request: Do not block hardware related NIC-settings for network devices, when NetworkManager is chosen Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 1 Platform: All OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: AxelKoellhofer@web.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.64 (X11; Linux i686; U; de) Presto/2.1.1 This request is related to this bug here https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=445122 IMHO it was a really good idea to block some of the YaST-functions (ifup related stuff) when NetworkManager is chosen to avoid users screwing up their network settings by configuring their devices in YaST and with NWM at the same timne which often lead to problems in earlier releases. However, there is still one issue, which makes things a little more complicated in some cases. IMHO this "blocking out" feature is too restrictive as one can not set up all hardware related features of your NIC(s) with NWM activated (udev-rules to map device to interface name, module for the device). Let me give you an example: http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/414430-network-card-issue-anythi... This problem is present for quite some time now, but the solution is/was always very simple, chooose tulip or dmfe (mostyl dmfe is the working one) in YaST, unload/load the respective modules and you're done (to be safe, you can also blacklist the other driver but this is normally not necessary). Another example would be some (faulty) NICs which sometimes randomly change their MAC-address when activated (Nivida cards using the "forcedeth"-module are infamous for that) and should use "BUS-ID" instead of "MAC-Address" for mapping via udev (70-persistent-net.rules) as a workaround. However, when using the defaults of openSUSE 11.1, you will have NWM enabled and the YaST-features to perform the changes needed for the device to work are not acessible, so you would have to a) change setup method from NWM to IFUP b) choose the card => edit => hardware c) make the hardware related changes d) let YaST save all changes e) switch back to NWM As those hardware related options are independent from the actual method of network setup (NWM or ifup) these features should be accessible no matter what you choose as setup method.
