That's not the kernel of openSUSE 11.4. That should be 2.6.36 or already 2.6.37rcX. I bet 2.6.31 is still missing KMS and therefore fbdev instead of intel driver is loaded and then falls back to 800x600 since 1024x600 is missing the video BIOS.
