Here, the panel and nautilus restart when I run as root: /etc/init.d/dbus restart Bidossessi, could you try to run that to see if that reproduces what you got there with ldap?

Given that, not easy to fix this. For instance your session dbus connection will get invalidated. Yes - dbus is not intended to be restart for a running session as per upstream.
