https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476421 Summary: upgrading breaks menu.lst, probably rendering the machine unbootable Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: seife@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Field Engineer As always, an update from FACTORY to FACTORY has again rendered my menu.lst defective: stoetzler:~ # cat /boot/grub/menu.lst # Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Tue Feb 17 13:12:12 CET 2009 default 0 timeout 8 ##YaST - generic_mbr gfxmenu (hd0,1)/message ##YaST - activate ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title openSUSE 11.2 Alpha 0 - 2.6.27.13-3 root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.13-3-default sysrq=yes printk.time=1 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK1214GAH_68E7W03RW-part5 splash=silent showopts vga=0x317 initrd /initrd-2.6.27.13-3-default ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: failsafe### title Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.2 Alpha 0 - 2.6.27.13-3 root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.13-3-default showopts ide=nodma apm=off noresume edd=off powersaved=off nohz=off highres=off processor.max_cstate=1 x11failsafe vga=0x317 initrd /initrd-2.6.27.13-3-default ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: Linux other title Linux other rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title Linux sda4 rootnoverify (hd0,3) chainloader +1 No "root=" options. I am quite sure that I had "root=/dev/disk/by-label/root" in there before. Looking more closely, I actually have not: stoetzler:~ # cat /proc/cmdline sysrq=yes printk.time=1 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK1214GAH_68E7W03RW-part5 splash=silent vga=0x317 So it must have been broken by a previous update. Anyway, isn't it wrong to write menu.lst without "root="? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
