[Bug 357514] New: YOU kernel update to 2.6.22.16-0. 1-default breaks Wireless, ath_pci & ath_hal .ko conflict
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=357514 Summary: YOU kernel update to 2.6.22.16-0.1-default breaks Wireless, ath_pci & ath_hal .ko conflict Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- The latest online update to 2.6.22.16-0.1-default breaks the madwifi driver because the driver kernel modules ath_pci and ath_hal are downloaded as part of the update but are NOT installed and CANNOT be installed with yast because of conflicts. You cannot even manually install the kernel modules through Yast software management. 01:14 rankin-p35a~> cat linux/yast/wifi_conflicts.txt #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2008-01-31 01:09:17 #### This would invalidate atom:kernel-default-2.6.22.16-0.1.i586. atom:kernel-default-2.6.22.16-0.1.i586 has unfulfilled requirements === atom:kernel-default-2.6.22.16-0.1.i586 === kernel-default-2.6.22.16-0.1.i586 provides kernel-default == 2.6.22.16-0.1, but is scheduled to be uninstalled. kernel-default-2.6.22.16-0.1.i586[update] provides kernel-default == 2.6.22.16-0.1, but another version of that package is already installed. And..., of course Yast deleted the working kernel, and my working kernel modules, from my system, so there is no possibility of going back! Let me know if I can send any other logs or do any more tests to help get this fixed. Millions of other atheros wifi users are going to be real surprised when they do their next online update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am not a huge fan of marking bugs as FIXED when they are WORKSFORME at the very best... This bug is definitely not fixed.
And then I just wonder why such essential package repositories seem so far away from any influence of the openSUSE team? Is it really a good idea to release updates that break something as necessary as networking? This is not my idea of "the world's most usable Linux", honestly. Then the madwifi kernel modules should be in the opensuse distribution, but for some reason I don't know, they aren't (curiously enough, given the fact that

The reason for not shipping madwifi (even in NON-OSS) is simple: legal issues!
What legal issues? I'm an attorney and I don't see any. Why don't we just ask the madwifi folks if we can include it or let them know we are going to? The copyright is simple, with minimal conditions and it is under a gpl 2 license agreement: root/madwifi/branches/madwifi-0.9.3/COPYRIGHT <quote> All files contained in this distribution are covered by the following 2 copyright unless explicitly identified otherwise. 3 4 /*- 5 * Copyright (c) 2002-2005 Sam Leffler, Errno Consulting 6 * All rights reserved. 7 * 8 * Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without 9 * modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions 10 * are met: 11 * 1. But there's nothing that we can do, right? We don't control building those packages, they are done by external people.
Actually the packages are built by a Novell employee (but as far as I know this is done in spare time, which probably still qualifies as "external" somehow). A "true" external dependency right now is the fact that the package maintainer has no direct access to the package repository over at madwifi.org, so he needs to run the updates through me. It is intended to change that in the mid-term at least. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
