[Bug 862821] New: Kernel update fails due to 'No space left on device'
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=862821 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=862821#c0 Summary: Kernel update fails due to 'No space left on device' Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: yast2-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: GeoBaltz@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:26.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/26.0 Attempted to install kernel 3.11.10 via YOU. On reboot, the only choice was for previous kernel (3.11.6). In /var/log/zypp/history, I found this: # 2014-02-07 10:46:16 kernel-desktop-3.11.10-7.1.x86_64.rpm installed ok # Additional rpm output: # # Kernel image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.11.10-7-desktop # Initrd image: /boot/initrd-3.11.10-7-desktop # Root device: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST31000333AS_9TE1JZ1J-part6 (/dev/sda6) (mounted on / as ext4) # Resume device: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST31000333AS_9TE1JZ1J-part5 (/dev/sda5) # Microcode: Adding Intel microcode 06-1a-04 # Kernel Modules: thermal_sys thermal processor fan pata_jmicron ata_generic scsi_dh scsi_dh_rdac scsi_dh_alua scsi_dh_emc scsi_dh_hp_sw xhci-hcd hid-logitech-dj hid-holtek-kbd hid-lenovo-tpkbd hid-ortek hid-roccat hid-roccat-common hid-roccat-arvo hid-roccat-isku hid-samsung ohci-pci # Features: acpi intel_microcode plymouth block usb resume.userspace resume.kernel # # gzip: stdout: No space left on device # Failed to build initrd # There was an error generating the initrd (8) # 2014-02-07 10:46:16|install|kernel-desktop|3.11.10-7.1|x86_64||repo-update|d4b38d39499b32730cd3f0ea68e7febd69fc329d231b25d6c04ab8b9333e505a| On this system, I have /tmp on a (small) tmpfs. From fstab: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs size=80M,mode=1777 0 0 mkinitrd goes through a list of possible filesystems looking for one with enough temp space, but it looks like the threshold is too low - mkinitrd is looking for 50MB, this /tmp has ~75MB available, and it's still too small. Suggest that mkinitrd look for a larger available filesystem. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Create a /tmp filesystem with 50-75MB available 2.Attempt to update kernel 3.See if it makes it all the way through the mkinitrd Actual Results: Grub is not updated - only previously installed kernels are listed. Expected Results: New kernel appears in the boot choices -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
