https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257340 Summary: After this mornings update Kernel fails to boot with Error 23 (Error while parsing number) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 2 Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de On an FSC Amilo Si1520 with openSuSE 10.3 alpha2plus, after updating to Kernel 2.6.21-rc4-git5-3-default the system is left unbootable :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257340 ------- Comment #2 from mboman@novell.com 2007-03-25 01:41 MST ------- Yhea, I had the same. You can press ESC at the Graphical Grub menu, then hit 'E' (For edit) on the menu entry for the new kernel, then 'E' again on the line that say; root (/dev/sda4) Change it to say; root (hd0,3) Then hit Enter, then hit 'B' for boot. Once the machine is booted, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to reflect the above changes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The first was addressed correctly in comment #2, though I'm not sure how root(/dev/sda4) made it into menu.lst. Did you edit that by hand, or is that something we need to track? The second isn't that you're missing SATA support. You can see in the top of your photo that it found the SATA disk and initialized it as sda. It appears that somehow /dev/disk/by-id/ata-FUJITSU... isn't getting created. What are the contents of /dev/disk/by-id when the boot fails? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The first was addressed correctly in comment #2, though I'm not sure how root(/dev/sda4) made it into menu.lst. Did you edit that by hand, or is that something we need to track?" This got there by itself, repeatedly. "It appears that somehow /dev/disk/by-id/ata-FUJITSU... isn't getting created. What are the contents of /dev/disk/by-id when the boot fails?" I just updated al kernel related rpms from the dvd and nothing else. Now I can boot to the old kernel again. I keep you posted what happens if I retry. Anyway, I suggest ( enhancement ) that existing kernels get only deleted after a successful boot to the new one. ( Makes life somewhat easier IMHO ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257340 ------- Comment #8 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-03-25 15:31 MST ------- OK, here it goes: I could boot to the "old" kernel and start YaST, I then installed the debug kernel (2.6.21-rc4-git5-3-debug), which I could boot to without problem. Started YaST again and updated the default kernel, this time booting default had no sign of problem 1 ( comment #2 - how do you actually insert the nice links ??), but ended up on having problem 2 again. /dev/disk/by-id is attached. Booting to the debug kernel still works flawless. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
