[Bug 219296] New: logdigest sends attachment instead of info inline
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219296 Summary: logdigest sends attachment instead of info inline Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 plus Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: joe_morris@ntm.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Logdigest used to send its info via email to root with the info in the email. With the one from beta1, i.e. logdigest-0.1.4-69, now sends an attachment, attachment.bin. Looking at the source reveals the normal info is there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It worked with 10.1. Since then, you switched to mailx (there was bug 188270, which sounds related): % zgrep " /bin/mail\>" /dist/full/full-10.1-i386/ARCHIVES.gz /suse/i586/mailx.rpm: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Nov 1 12:44 /bin/mail -> /usr/bin/nail % zgrep " /bin/mail\>" /dist/full/full-i386/ARCHIVES.gz /suse/i586/mailx.rpm: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 Nov 6 23:54 /bin/mail -> /usr/bin/mailx -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219296 werner@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |DUPLICATE ------- Comment #2 from werner@novell.com 2006-11-10 09:42 MST ------- Please do not send binary kludge and mailx will send text/plain with charset=iso-8859-1 or charset=utf-8. The current mailx is conform to the RFC about what is text and waht is not text. If this is not wanted see comment #21 of bug #189974 how binary text can be attached as text/plain. Btw: The mailx on 10.1 and openSuSE is nailx. The current nailx is now used as the offical mailx in Heirloom project. Due to this renaming the link has changed. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 189974 *** -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219296 ------- Comment #3 from joe_morris@ntm.org 2006-11-10 18:42 MST ------- After reading https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=189974 I am concluding there is no bug in mailx which is checking the contents and seeing non text characters and marking it binary and making it an attachment. Wouldn't that mean there is still a bug in logdigest for sending non text characters (and maybe others, i.e.mysql)? IOW, Isn't the only way to get back to 10.1 behavior is to either break mailx by editing /etc/mail.rc or making logdigest not send non text characters? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219296 ------- Comment #4 from werner@novell.com 2006-11-13 03:27 MST ------- IMHO the logdigest script could use the MAILRC environment variable to overwrite the users startup file, that means instead of reading ~/.mailrc (guess: user is root?) an other mailrc e.g. /etc/logdigest/mailrc which includes set contenttype-cntrl="text/plain; charset=unknown-8bit" nevertheless IMHO the logtail program should do what the header says: /* ------------------------------------------------------------------*/ /* logtail.c -- ASCII file tail program that remembers last position.*/ ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219296 ------- Comment #5 from joe_morris@ntm.org 2006-11-13 04:49 MST ------- OK, this seemed to work. I copied /etc/mail.rc to /etc/logdigest/mailrc, and added the set contenttype-cntrl="text/plain; charset=unknown-8bit" as the 3rd line. Then, I added MAILRC=/etc/logdigest/mailrc to /etc/cron.daily/logdigest. IT WORKED! Actually, I first added MAILRC=/etc/logdigest/mail.rc and the file was named mail.rc, but that didn't work. I wondered if you intentionally left out the period above, so tried mailrc and that worked. I realize it is really a work around, but seems acceptable to me for now to have it more usable. Now I don't need to view the source of the email to find out what happened in the logs. Thanks for the help. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219296 ------- Comment #6 from joe_morris@ntm.org 2006-11-14 16:59 MST ------- Well, I spoke too soon. It did not even work around the problem Iwhich definitely seems to be with logdigest). Here is an excerpt from todays attachment. I see a =20 and lots of =3D in the text. Any ideas? If there are messages that are not important to you, or you want to catch others not found here, you can add regular expressions to=20 the files in /etc/logdigest/. /var/log/messages: _______________________________________________________________________= _________ Messages matching keywords in the "alarming" list: =3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D= -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- (5 lines) Nov 14 07:40:55 jmorris smartd[3915]: Device: /dev/hda, SMART Prefailur= e Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate changed from 100 to 98 Nov 14 08:07:32 jmorris su: FAILED SU (to root) joe on /dev/pts/0 Nov 14 18:49:47 jmorris smartd[3909]: Device: /dev/hdb, SMART Prefailur= e Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate changed from 60 to 61 Nov 15 06:19:48 jmorris smartd[3992]: Device: /dev/hdb, SMART Prefailur= e Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate changed from 61 to 60 Nov 15 06:49:47 jmorris smartd[3992]: Device: /dev/hda, SMART Prefailur= e Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate changed from 100 to 99 All lines that are not in the "ignore" list: =3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D= -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
