Using fglrx everything works fine. Egbert, do you still need a testrun with your patch?
No, I'm glad it's solved the right way. This patch would only reenable PIO so that some obscure SMI BIOS calls could succeed. On the other hand we have set up BIOS scratch registers to tell the BIOS that another driver is in charge of the hardware. Thus the SMI BIOS triggered backlight events should not happen in the first place.
