This chip supports the DriveXpert RAID Technologie. Both drives should appear as one data-drive and the other one as it's backup. OpenSUSE 11.3-64 does not work on that drive. OpenSUSE 11.3-64 is now being installed on a normal SATA-drive and the DriveXpert-Drive is supposed to be a data disk. fdisk /dev/sdd and the command "p" show a normal partition table. mount and tune2fs cannot recognize the installed partitions, e.g. I/O error or bad superblock.... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. mount /dev/sdd6 -t ext3 2. tune2fs /dev/sdd6 3. installation on that drive does not work. Actual Results: -> no superblock found -> I/O error Knoppix http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html works. Knoppix seems to have the appropriate driver. Running OpenSUSE11.3-64 on VMware installed on Windows 7-64, the DriveXpert-drive is also accessible on works correctly. They just appear as one drive from first boot. The BIOS setting defines that.. I have a better understanding of DriveXpert now. This isn't a software RAID issue. The Sil5723 should be completely transparent to the OS. The OS should simply see a single SATA drive and the Sil5723 takes for of mapping that into the RAID1 pair. So if there is a problem it would have to be fixed at the SATA level somehow. I notice there are a couple of places in the SATA code where it take special actions for this particular device - but presumably there is something else needed. I know little about SATA and cannot help any more. This bug should be assigned to someone with expertise and knowledge in SATA devices.. This chip is quite the same as my SiL5723. ahci.c seems to address another problem, but I see, that some problems with the chip are wellknown. When I GOOGLE "SIMG5723" I get a lot of information about 5723 related bugs repaired in the several Linux systems. Although Knoppix my problem (described above) does not appear, I could not find a ahci.c file in the Knoppix sources. So the kernel sources semm to have another base. These are just some findings, which probably could help to identify the bug. Could someone please try to solve my problem? Thank you very much in advance! The Problem seems to be solved. I can access now my ext3-filesystems as well as the windows filesystems on that RAID-Drive. DriveXpert seems to be supported now.
