https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228413 Summary: Powersaved does NOT capture the power button event or does NOT care about it Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: justforspam@email.it QAContact: qa@suse.de I have a laptop HP pavilion dv5200, SUSE 10.2 I have configured powersave (vi /etc/powersave/event) in order to suspend to disk when the power button is pressed: EVENT_BUTTON_POWER="suspend_to_disk" EVENT_BUTTON_SLEEP="suspend_to_disk" EVENT_BUTTON_LID_OPEN="ignore" EVENT_BUTTON_LID_CLOSED="standby" But it does not work. Simply nothing happens, not even in the logs as far as I know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Then these applications have to care about those buttons. So you have to configure the actions in these GUI frontends. The documentation in the powersave config file will be updated with an online update soon. Unfortunatelly, with kpowersave this is not possible yet, only via the config file. For more information, see http://dkukawka.blogspot.com/2006/11/kpowersave-config-tutorial.html. I will leave this bug open as reference for the documentation update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228413 ------- Comment #2 from justforspam@email.it 2006-12-14 04:36 MST ------- Thank you that is exactly my problem, as I'm using kpowersave. Furthermore from your blog entry it's not clear how to configure it even via the config file. What is the name of the event to capture? Thank you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Would like to suspend to disk on lid close and shutdown when the power button is pressed. I'm afraid, that the above documentation does not solve the problem and does not explain how to make it work. So please do not close this bug because everybody is having this problem. At least those of us which are using KDE. Thanks Stefan PS: Are you sure kpowersaved is capable of doing it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I just managed to suspend to disk with the following entry in ~/.kde/share/config/kpowersaverc: ActionOnLidClose=SUSPEND2RAM :-) But I'm still not able to shutdown when the power button is pressed. :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

not at the moment, but you can check this candidate for a you update: http://beta.suse.com/private/dkukawka/kpowersave/0.7.2pre/ This version should shutdown the machine automatical on power button. The config variables are: ActionOnPowerButton=SHUTDOWN ActionOnPowerButtonValue= -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Me again. I just managed to suspend to disk with the following entry in ~/.kde/share/config/kpowersaverc:
ActionOnLidClose=SUSPEND2RAM :-)
I can't confirm this for the upcomming version of KPowersave (see last comment). SUSPEND2DISK should work correct. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228413 ------- Comment #9 from stefan.fink@swisscom.com 2006-12-18 03:53 MST ------- The power button now works with the new version but kpowersave removes the configuration entry in the user's kpowersaverc file each time it quits or rewrites this file. On the other hand suspend to disk does not work anymore (in fact in #5 there is a typo, I sucessfully tested ActionOnLidClose=SUSPEND2DISK and not ActionOnLidClose=SUSPEND2RAM. At least this is what I think I've done, because the ActionOnLid thing also disappeared from the config file in the meantime). Now with the new version the manual suspend to disk gives me this dialog: Could not umount external media before suspend/standby. (Reason: An unknown error occured) Would you like to continue suspend/standby anyway? (Warning: Continue suspend can cause data loss!) There is no external media mounted at all. Output of df: Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hda6 6198404 4469352 1414180 76% / udev 258044 92 257952 1% /dev /dev/hda8 51406676 44722240 4073072 92% /data /dev/hda5 6198404 3137844 2745688 54% /suse_10.0 PS: Just wondering if shutdown via power button shouldn't be a system-wide, non-windowmanager related thing. In this sense it would maybe be better to handle it with powersave and not kpowersave or it's gnome equivalant. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228413 ------- Comment #10 from ehall@ehsco.com 2006-12-18 09:56 MST ------- I think this is related so I will append here. If I press the power button while a user is logged in, the logout dialog pops up and blocks the shutdown process. If a user is not logged in, the shutdown process runs as normal. This is with basic unmodified install, with gdm/gnome. What's really strange is that the exact same thing happens with remote poweroff via IPMI. I guess the IPMI module is registering with the same power off service as the desktop. This is all completely wrong behavior for a default install. If I press the power button, I expect the system to go bye-bye, unless I have explicitly remapped the button to some other function. This is especially annoying with servers (the IPMI stuff in particular since that's a remote poweroff). The 'poweroff' script does work correctly, regardless of whether someone is logged into gnome or not. This is the only method that actually works right. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

No, it's not related. You are talking about gdm/gnome-power-manager. So feel free to open a new bug, assigning it to rodrigo@novell.com, taking me into CC. This bug is about kpowersave. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
