[Bug 219114] New: compiz extremely slow on i915 hardware
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 Summary: compiz extremely slow on i915 hardware Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Xgl AssignedTo: dreveman@novell.com ReportedBy: dmueller@novell.com QAContact: bperry@novell.com CC: mhopf@novell.com, sndirsch@novell.com this seems to have regressed on 10.2, 10.1/sled was fine. I'm not entirely sure if it is caused by mesa or another xgl specific issue. I can reproduce similiar problems with other 3d apps (like google-earth or some 1st person shooter like sauerbraten). the issue is that compiz at most produces 2fps update rate, even though the cpu seems to be mostly idle. it seems sndirsch/mhopf already know about it, so this is a reminder bugreport. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #1 from sndirsch@novell.com 2006-11-08 09:51 MST ------- Matthias, this is the same issuee as aj showed us yesterday. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #2 from mhopf@novell.com 2006-11-08 11:46 MST ------- I have verified this on my i915 machine as well. Seems like all i810 driver machines have been hit. David knows about this issue since approx. last week, and already has an idea. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #3 from joe@novell.com 2006-11-15 14:07 MST ------- Just for the record: Not fixed on 10.2 B2+ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 dreveman@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |ASSIGNED ------- Comment #4 from dreveman@novell.com 2006-11-15 18:40 MST ------- Some recent changes to mesa is causing glitz to fail at looking up a function pointer for glXCopySubBufferMESA which is used for efficient partial screen updates. I've applied a workaround to the glitz code used by xgl and performance should be OK again with this new xgl package. The fix has been submitted to stable and an updated xgl package can be found here: http://w3.suse.de/~dreveman/xgl-cvs_060522-31.i586.rpm Please verify that it works and close the bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #5 from mhopf@novell.com 2006-11-16 08:47 MST ------- compiz --replace gconf -> server crash?!? This didn't happen before... Same happens if I restart compiz with compiz --replace dbus decoration wobbly minimize cube rotate zoom scale move resize place switcher water It first seemed like the wobbly plugin is the culprit. But the server also just crashed on me while rotating the cube, w/o the wobbly plugin loaded. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #6 from mhopf@novell.com 2006-11-16 09:04 MST ------- I should note that while testing this package compiz still seemed to be pretty slow - especially the cube rotation didn't get more than approx. 12fps - depending on the scene complexity. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #7 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-11-16 09:09 MST ------- 12fps would be roughly fine I guess. but a server crash (like I get) and approximateply 1.5-2fps (like before) is not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

12fps would be roughly fine I guess.
No, because this points towards something being severely broken. Even the intel driver is capable of >60fps on simple layouts (not too many open windows). And I had it already running that way on SL10.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But when I turn the rain effect on, the window moves swiftly. I don't know why. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #11 from dreveman@novell.com 2006-11-17 12:36 MST ------- I used a fresh install of 10.2 beta2+ for testing. Fresh install and http://w3.suse.de/~dreveman/xgl-cvs_060522-31.i586.rpm package. I don't have any serious performance problems, 60fps when rotating the cube. I think the server crash when restarting compiz is an old DRI driver issue that never got fixed. As long as you don't restart compiz it's fine. If I remember correctly it's something with the driver reporting negative number of supported texture units for a context after some other context has been destroyed. If windows move swiftly when the rain effect is on, it's definitely a glXCopySubBufferMESA issue and my new xgl package should hopefully solve that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219114 ------- Comment #13 from dmueller@novell.com 2006-11-20 03:43 MST ------- For me, the situation is the following: a) it is slightly faster during cube-switching b) it is slow when using 1280x1024 or lower c) it is slow when using external screen d) it crashes xgl upon certain actions (e.g. compiz restarted). so imho, the bug is fixed, but I'd file 3 new bugreports for the other 3 issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
