[Bug 681097] New: openSUSE 11.4 Gnome virtual machine can't enter "Unity" mode on an openSUSE 11.4 VMware Workstation 7.1.3 host
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=681097 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=681097#c0 Summary: openSUSE 11.4 Gnome virtual machine can't enter "Unity" mode on an openSUSE 11.4 VMware Workstation 7.1.3 host Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: znmeb@borasky-research.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 I have an AMD64 workstation running openSUSE 11.4. I am running VMware Workstation 7.1.3 build 324285. I created a new virtual guest machine using the openSUSE 11.4 i586 DVD (final). open-vm-tools and open-vm-tools-gui are installed: # zypper search open-vm-tools Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... S | Name | Summary | Type --+-------------------+----------------------------------+-------- i | open-vm-tools | Open Virtual Machine Tools | package i | open-vm-tools-gui | Open Virtual Machine Tools - GUI | package But "Unity" does not work - when I attempt to start it up, it gives me an error dialog: "The virtual machine cannot enter Unity mode because: - The guest operating system does not have VMware Tools installed. - The guest operating system's resolution cannot be changed." Some of the VMware modules appear to be installed: linux-46u3:~ # lsmod|grep vm vmsync 3234 0 vmblock 11346 1 vmw_balloon 6216 0 vmxnet 18175 0 vmci 42071 0 linux-46u3:~ # I tried restarting the daemon: linux-46u3:~ # /etc/init.d/vmtoolsd restart Shutting down vmtoolsd killproc: cannot stat /usr/bin/vmware-user: No such file or directory FATAL: Module vmmemctl not found. done Starting vmtoolsd FATAL: Module vmmemctl not found. done linux-46u3:~ # So it looks like the "open-vm-tools" or "open-vm-tools-gui" package is broken. I have a workaround - install the "devel_kernel" pattern and then re-install VMware Tools from the ISO image that comes with the VMware Workstation and reboot. Then Unity works. But there are some other issues with that. In particular, some of the modules don't compile: /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only/super.c:73:4: error: unknown field ‘clear_inode’ specified in initializer make[4]: *** [/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only/super.o] Error 1 make[3]: *** [_module_/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only] Error 2 make[2]: *** [sub-make] Error 2 make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.37.1-1.2-obj/i386/desktop' make: *** [vmhgfs.ko] Error 2 make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only' /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only/vmci_drv.c:96:4: error: unknown field ‘ioctl’ specified in initializer /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only/vmci_drv.c:96:4: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only/vmci_drv.c: In function ‘vmci_init’: /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only/vmci_drv.c:156:4: error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_MUTEX’ make[4]: *** [/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only/vmci_drv.o] Error 1 make[3]: *** [_module_/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only] Error 2 make[2]: *** [sub-make] Error 2 make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.37.1-1.2-obj/i386/desktop' make: *** [vmci.ko] Error 2 make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only' Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE 11.4 GNOME desktop virtual machine in a VMware Workstation 7.1.3 host running on openSUSE 11.4 2. Bring up the virtual machine. Attempt to enter "Unity" mode. Actual Results: Error dialog as given in "Details". Expected Results: I expected it to go into "Unity" mode. I think I've traced everything I can at this point. Installing VMware Tools in the guest is a partial workaround, but it looks like neither the open-vm-tools as distributed with openSUSE 11.4 nor the version on the ISO file that comes with VMware Workstation 7.1.3 is fully functional. So I'm not sure whether a fix can be done by just updating open-vm-tools. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
