[Bug 376742] New: Wireless doesn't work (wpa_supplicant doesn't get run)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=376742 Summary: Wireless doesn't work (wpa_supplicant doesn't get run) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: federico@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Development For some reason, wpa_supplicant is not getting run. As a result, nm-applet shows no wireless interfaces or available networks. The workaround is to run this by hand as root: /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -u -f /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log And then to kill and restart nm-applet. After a few seconds, wireless works again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did changing PERMISSION_SECURITY to "easy local" fixed your problem?
I seem to suffer the same problem (see #381757) and my PERMISSION_SECURITY settings are "easy local". btw: before updating from 10.3 to 11.0-beta1, I've used the 2.6.25-rc9 kernel (recompiled from factory sources) with 10.3 because of e1000-problems. just by using the new kernel (and thus new i??3945 driver) I already got the same symtoms: - driver didn't get loaded automatically - wpa_supplicant didn't start anymore (or crash?) - WLAN LED didn't blink/light anymore - iwlist scan shows access point but no connect I noticed that in 10.3 there was a user mode daemon /sbin/ipw3945d but with 11.0 I can't find anything similar for the iwl3945 driver. is this ok? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

iwl3945 does not need any userspace daemon anymore. The only thing you need in addition to the kernel is iwl3945-ucode. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

thanks for confirmation! ucode looks ok (and works at least for "iwlist scan"): YaST2 # rpm -qf /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode iwl3945-ucode-2.14.1.5-42 YaST2 # rpm -Vf /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode YaST2 # so it's "only" a wpa_supplicant issue ? maybe I dare to switch off WPA/WEP for a while for testing... what bothers me is that the LED for wlan doen't blick or light at all ?!? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

update: I switched off WPA and WEP in my fritz.box. now I get an association, but still I don't get any single tcp packet (tcpdump after "if up" while trying dhcpcd -- not even a 1st packet send) any idea what I shall try/check ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

next update, now with todays factory: iwl3945 works with some unknown access point (I'm at a conference in poland right now) without encryption (open WLAN), but LED still doesn't blink nor light :-( there are strange startup and yast setup problems, because the wlan device gets renamed twice during startup :-( from "dmesg | grep -i wlan" : wlan0 renamed to wlan0_rename wlan0_rename renamed to wlan0_rename_re wlan0_rename_re: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0_rename_re: authenticate with AP ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff wlan0_rename_re: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0_rename_re: authenticate with AP 00:0e:8e:1a:1b:83 wlan0_rename_re: RX authentication from 00:0e:8e:1a:1b:83 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) wlan0_rename_re: authenticated wlan0_rename_re: associate with AP 00:0e:8e:1a:1b:83 wlan0_rename_re: RX AssocResp from 00:0e:8e:1a:1b:83 (capab=0x421 status=0 aid=7) wlan0_rename_re: associated wlan0_rename_re: switched to short barker preamble (BSSID=00:0e:8e:1a:1b:83) wlan0_rename_re: RX too short data frame payload wlan0_rename_re: RX too short data frame payload after reboot, wlan doesn't work. after 1st "rcnetwork restart" the ESSID is set correctly ("any" before), but iwconfig shows "invalied access point' or similar instead of associated mac address. only after 2nd "rcnetwork restart" I get an association and WLAN works... I can't test WEP or WPA this week, though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

one more datapoint: I've compiled compat-wireless-2.6 (1.2.26ks) which works too -- but still no LED support :-((( for a production system this is pretty _bad_ because I want to see (a) if wlan is on/working or (b) I have some access problems..... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

after reading this patch http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1209#c59 I realized that compat-wireless-2.6 (1.2.26ks) already yas LED support -- you only have to configure it and fix the Makefile (add iwl-3945-led.c in /drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/Makefile and CONFIG_IWL3945_LEDS=y in config.mk, see patch for the missing details... with this CONFIG_IWL3945_LEDS=y LED work witl iwl3945 in my T60 !!

to encourage you fixing this **before** 11.0-GM I only can agree with the following comment: http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1209#c52 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is the initial issue from comment #1 still true in Beta3 (wpa_supplicant doesn't get run)?
Im not Clark, but here are my 0.02 EUR on this issue: about 23 weeks back I switched to using "compat-wireless-2008-04-30" and since then WPA worked flawlessly (and LED is working!!). recently I updated to kernel-default-2.6.25.3-2 from factory, so again the iwl3945 from opensuse was used -- and WPA stopped working again. so I rebuild/installed compat-wireless-2008-04-30 for the new kernel, and again WPA worked for me. now I'm using kernel-default-2.6.25.3-2 with compat-wireless-2008-05-07 -- works for me, including bells and LEDs ;-) so I'd vote to consider/add compat-wireless-2008-05-07 at least for my case -- as usual YMMV... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

btw: the LED stuff still has to be enabled separately (why????) in compat-wireless-2008-05-07.tar.bz2 e.g. using echo -ne "CONFIG_IWL3945_LEDS=y\nCONFIG_IWLWIFI_LEDS=y\nCONFIG_MAC80211_LEDS=y\n" >> config.mk before compiling, then just (as root) make make install make load be happy and WPA... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am still hitting it with my intel 2915 wireless card. I have been running zypper dup since alpha 3 and I suppose I am running something pretty close to beta 3 right now. That said, I have not re-installed from scratch. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Due to the comments #21-23 closing as FIXED.
for your records: wlan and wpa2 is working fine for me (beta3plus), only the LED support is missing...
Harald, the iwl3954 issue is something different. Feel free to open a new bug for it.
