[Bug 228364] New: Boot installer fails; tries to write to non-existent floppy
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228364 Summary: Boot installer fails; tries to write to non-existent floppy Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: psychonaut@nothingisreal.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I recently upgraded my system (a Samsung X20 laptop) from SuSE 9.3 to openSUSE 10.2 via the DVD. I used the upgrade option rather than performing a fresh install. When the installer got to the boot loader installation, it prompted me for a floppy disk to format into a boot disk. However, my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. (The installer already knew this, because when it scanned my hardware it didn't detect a floppy drive.) I don't recall the exact dialog window at the time, but I'm pretty sure the only options it gave me were "OK" or "Cancel". I don't remember which button I tried, but eventually another dialog popped up indicating that the boot loader installer had failed. At the end of the DVD installation, the system reset, but since the installer had deleted or partially overwritten my boot loader, so I couldn't boot into GNU/Linux or Windows. I had to put the DVD back in the drive, reset the computer, and select "Repair system". The "Repair system" module correctly noted that the bootloader hadn't been installed, and installed it for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
