[Bug 665899] New: boot failure with btrfs root since new util-linux landed (missing fsck.btrfs)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=665899 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=665899#c0 Summary: boot failure with btrfs root since new util-linux landed (missing fsck.btrfs) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kairo@kairo.at QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b10pre) Gecko/20110112 Firefox/4.0b10pre SeaMonkey/2.1b2pre Until very recently, bug 599224 was a convenience problem and a non-fatal error message at boot time. Now, it's a fatal showstopper, I think since the new util-linux landed (it talks about "util-linux 2.19" in the messages around this, so I suspect the code causing the failure is there). I'm filing it as a new bug I think a non-existing fsck should not be fatal to boot, and it wasn't until now. What's happening is that having a btrfs root partition, the boot routine tries to fsck it, doesn't find fsck.btrfs, counts that as a fsck failure and stops booting the system. I temporary solved it by symlinking /sbin/fsck.btrfs to /bin/true from the emergency console that comes up then (after an rw remount), but that of course can't be a permanent solution. The fact is that btrfs doesn't need any fsck at startup, so we just shouldn't require one at boot time. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set up a current Factory installation's root partition with btrfs. 2. Boot it. Actual Results: Boot failure due to missing fsck.btrfs and claimed fsck failure, ending up in the emergency console. Expected Results: Boot the system with an fsck for btrfs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Dirk, can we make /sbin/fsck.btrfs a hardlink to /bin/true in btrfsprogs package? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For an update (+1).
Should we really use a hardlink here? Is a symlink not the better choice?
