As far as I remember, the only main changes that have been done on this system since my initial report, was the install of kernel-default and addition of another disk /dev/sdb to another LVM VG. Currently, /etc/mtab shows as: LANG=C ls -l /etc/mtab lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Oct 11 16:29 /etc/mtab -> /proc/self/mounts FWIW, I remember that when the root fs did not show up with df, an explicit df / did show it. Another thing from memory, then a cat /proc/mounts (I think) showed the rootfs as something like (ellipsis hand editied for brevity): - / ext4 rw... so with a hyphen as the first field i.s.o. /dev/mapper/system-root / ext4 rw... as it now does.
