On my "x86-64" system, I would like to have Firefox in both the 32- as well as 64-bit version installed in parallel -- due to the missing 64-bit Java plug-in.

But, I have not been able to figure out how to persuade YaST to do this.

Currently, I have the 64-bit version of Firefox installed, and as far as I can see, YaST2 does not allow for a parallel installation, nor even for the swapping from the 64-bit to 32-bit version either.

Therefore is it at all possible to persuade YaST to have these two versions of Firefox installed in parallel, or do I have to do this manually by myself?

As Marcus said a parallel installation with RPM is not possible. It never was designed that way (and it doesn't make much sense IMHO). YaST2 does allow "swapping" from the 64bit to the 32bit version (at least if you use the Qt package selector and use the versions tab there. Just switching the version might not do that. Its not possible, since they have overlapping filenames and one would destroy the other.

How are the chances to make it possible with different directories for parallel configurations? KDE 3 and 4 can coexist. Almost everything would be possible but I doubt it's worth it in this case. How would you decide which Firefox to use? And in most cases you will end up needing the other one. With stuff like new Java versions hopefully available with 64bit plugin in the near future and an improved nspluginwrapper it should be fine in most cases to have a 64bit Firefox.
