[Bug 671533] New: installer does not set up dm-crypt/LVM dependencies for booting
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=671533 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=671533#c0 Summary: installer does not set up dm-crypt/LVM dependencies for booting Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Test case: 1. set up encrypted partition 2. set a LVM partitions on top of it 3. continue installing system Problem -- the dependencies between dm-crypt and LVM (in this case LVM depends on dm-crypt) are not set up. In result booting system is done by probing (trial & error method). First LVM tries to mount partitions -- this fails, and this is printed for user, then dm-crypt kicks in, then LVM tries to mount partitions again. Luckily, except for scarring the user, (I hope) there are no technical problems with it, but anyway, it should be handled in common-sense manner, no probing, just according to the list of dependencies. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does the installer setup some dependencies incorrectly
Yes. Strictly speaking I suspect it set redundant checking to avoid setting any dependency (however this is my wild guess). Look -- you set encrypting partition and on top of it you set up LVM volumes. When computer starts, should system: a) set up LVM volumes b) or decrypt partition first? What is your answer. I think you will say (b) -- because you and I know there is no chance for LVM if the partition is not accessible. However in reality system tries to actually do this -- (a) -- despite it does not make any sense. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
