[Bug 394177] New: alsa sound output broken on default gnome installs
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=394177 Summary: alsa sound output broken on default gnome installs Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: wberrier@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: snorp@novell.com, rodrigo@novell.com, cyberorg@opensuse.org Found By: --- A default gnome install sets up pulseaudio for direct access to the sound device (opposed to using dmix). This is great, but it breaks all applications that try to output sound to alsa. To fix this we need to: 1. install alsa-plugins-pulse for a default gnome install 2. configure /etc/asound.conf to include the following: # PulseAudio plugin configuration # Let's create a virtual device "pulse" for mixer and PCM pcm.pulse { type pulse } ctl.pulse { type pulse } # Let's make it the default! pcm.!default { type pulse } ctl.!default { type pulse } 3. ship /etc/asound.conf alsa-plugins-pulse (either own the file or generate on post-install) Most of our apps use esd or gstreamer, so this isn't an issue. But, there are apps that will try to go directly to alsa, and this will be needed. Granted, this only happens on cards that have one subdevice, but that seems to includes most sound cards these days. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Don`t forget lowcost usb-headsets without mic and usb-speakers(for example a pcm only device, from MSI) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We need to make sure that the configuration is not included on installs where the pulseaudio daemon is running.
Oops, this should be: where the pulseaudio daemon _isn't_ running. As for the alsa-plugins-pulse dep, no package actually depends on pulseaudio-esound-compat: rpm -q --whatrequires pulseaudio-esound-compat no package requires pulseaudio-esound-compat That's because old legacy esd programs still link against libesd.so.0, and libesd0 has no dependency on pulseaudio. pulseaudio-esound-compat is only used to start the pulse daemon when '/usr/bin/esd' is called. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
