[Bug 738279] New: openSUSE creates user directory based on username before user is ready to define user directory
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738279 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738279#c0 Summary: openSUSE creates user directory based on username before user is ready to define user directory Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: grglsn765@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 Ok, I went to install 12.1, and here is what happened. I had sda6 as root with 11.4 installed, and so I selected a new install on sda7 (a separate partition I had set aside for this purpose). I have sda8 as my home directory. Here is the problem, which goes back to when I installed 11.4. When I first installed it, I set my user name as "george" and so my home directory was /home/george on sda8. Then at a later date, I changed my username to "georgelenovo", but I wanted to keep my home directory as /home/george, so I selected in Yast not to switch my home directory. So now I log in as "georgelenovo" but my home directory on 11.4 was still /home/george. Now fast forward to today. I installed 12.1, and I set up my username as "georgelenovo", like I wanted, but I wanted to keep my old user directory as just /home/george. However, the setup program created a new directory called /home/georgelenovo and put all the KDE files in that directory. I was able to fix it on a tip from the openSUSE list to go to /etc/passwd and change the line for the home directory to point to /home/george instead of /home/georgelenovo. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Fresh install of openSUSE 12.1 2. set username 3. system will automatically set home directory to /home/username instead of prompting the user if that is the desired directory I was asked to file this bug report on the openSUSE list, and to reference the following openSUSE mailing list URL: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2011-12/msg01166.html -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

3. system will automatically set home directory to /home/username instead of prompting the user if that is the desired directory
cannot be considered a bug, as (by far) most of the users would use such proposal and an extra question is just extra delay. However, it is possible to enter expert settings during second stage of installation, but you need to uncheck "Automatic configuration" at the beginning. Or do you think that even user creation on the installed system does something wrong? I guess the edit you've done by editing /etc/passwd should be possible in YaST as well, just change home directory there... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
