See the discussion in http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?act=ST&f=33&t=41194. I believe the 0x0056a4d5 semaphore is part of dmix. In my case it had 0600 permissions, so I tried adding "defaults.pcm.ipc_perm 0660" to asound thinking that all audio group users could then read it, but although this changed the sema permissions, there were still problems - as though artsd cannot cope if the semaphore exists at all. I worked round it, as Christoph says, by removing the semaphore (ipcrm) in the shutdown part of startkde. If you delete the semaphore while a sound application is locked up, sound suddenly springs to life. It does appear to be working - that is, I can switch users back and forth, and the sound system is perfectly happy in either login. Curiously, the semaphore does still appear when no sound is playing, but only for one account - eg. logged in as nick, I'll see the semaphore created by fred: nick@pollux:~> ipcs -s ------ Semaphore Arrays -------- key semid owner perms nsems 0x0056a4d5 851968 fred 660 1 But logged in as fred, I never see anything created by nick (no sems listed). Is that as you would expect? ("fred" was the first user to create the semaphore probably). The problem did not occur every time so I'll continue to monitor this, but it looks like it's fixed.
