[Bug 777450] New: provide an installation option for SSDs
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=777450 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=777450#c0 Summary: provide an installation option for SSDs Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: RC 2 Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: estellnb@elstel.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1 A checkbox 'is SSD' as installation option would be very beneficial to openSUSE: auto-select the maximum block size (4K), mount with noatime and discard (ext4 only) mount options. If we only have SSDs in our system the NOOP scheduling strategy as already selectable after installation via YaST2/kernel options is faster than CFQ. Besides this I also use tmpfs for /tmp /var/tmp /var/lock,run,spool if I have enough RAM (preserves the SSD from unnecassary RWs). The Linux user also recommends 'write back caching' for /etc/hdparm.conf and at least an fdisk -H 32 -S 32 alignment. If these options are available on installation yet, installation itself may be much faster; if not doable for 12.2 at least beneficial for 12.3 Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

* mount /tmp, /var/tmp to tmpfs
One needs to be careful about moving /tmp without some forethought on what it will impact. An example, k3b uses the /tmp for storage of the working image and fails when them space is exhausted making using RAM a problem unless you have a lot of it when doing a DVD. It would be good to have as an option, just not as the default without a warning note or tweaking the defaults for programs that need huge amounts of temp space. With 64 GB SSDs selling in the $50 (USD) range more and more folks are going to be adding them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
