[Bug 385683] New: NetworkManager should default to single-device behavior
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=385683 Summary: NetworkManager should default to single-device behavior Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ajorgensen@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- NM now has support for multiple devices being active at the same time but there is no UI for controlling this behavior yet. Having multiple devices active by default can cause confusion for the user. For example, I was connected to my wireless network and plugged in to my wired network so that I could transfer some large files. The transfer didn't get any faster, though, because it was routing over wireless anyway. Until there is UI to control the behavior the default should be to only connect through one device. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, you've asked for it several times here. The question still remains, WHY? Why would anyone need this? That's exactly what the use cases I'm asking for should describe.
Because it's wrong to be connected to the same network twice as in the case of where I might be plugged in to my router and also connected to it wirelessly. This condition may even cause problems with things like Avahi (I'm not sure) but in any case it's wrong. Now if you wanted to work some magic here and bond the interfaces that might be cool but otherwise it's wrong.
Again, why? For a corner case where you never want to use a certain device (buggy driver, slow card and you got another, faster one, whatever), you can edit /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf.
So that I, the user, am in control of which device is active. One more use case: Allow the user to control which device is default. Suppose you have a wired network which can route to the Internet and a wireless network which also can but the wired network is on a crappy dsl modem and the wireless is on fiber. In this case the wired interface looks faster but it's really not (except to local places). Or suppose we have a wired network which has a draconian firewall and a wireless network with no firewall. Even though the wired network is faster I need the wireless to be my default route. Or maybe I have a fast wireless network (11n) and a reliable 100Mb wired network. The wireless may be faster but the wired will give me overall better performance because it never drops packets. If all NM gave me was the ability to override which one is the default route (and easy to understand and use UI in the applet to control this behavior) I think I would be satisfied. Maybe a radio button next to the interface that would select which interface was default and NM would use it's own logic except when I explicitly change it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
