[Bug 812087] New: Suspend to disk (hibernate) not working - fails to resume session
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=812087 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=812087#c0 Summary: Suspend to disk (hibernate) not working - fails to resume session Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jorge.adriano@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=532210) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=532210) /var/log/pm-suspend.log User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:19.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/19.0 Suspend to disk apparently saves information to disk, and automatically shuts down the computer, as expected. But resuming session fails. It does read information from disk, but afterwards all we get a black screen. My laptop is a Asus N53S Suspend to disk was working fine as of 3.6.x and 3.7.x, as indicated by this comment of mine on another bug report: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=725945#c15 I have 3.8.4 installed, I'll give it a try to see if it works. I'm attaching pm-suspend.log Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. suspend to disk 2. wait 3. turn on computer Actual Results: non responsive system, just a black screen Expected Results: proper resume -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As a sidenote suspending to memory rather than disk does not work either. There is no freeze nor crash. It simply fails to suspend.
What is in dmesg after failed suspend then? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think this is the relevant part:

No, this is after failed resume from hibernation. I call for dmesg after suspend to ram when it fails... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The controller may have died. Do you see this with the debug kernel?
I just installed 3.10.0-1.g3dcd746-debug. Suspend fails as above, but can't find the error message in the dmesg output (see attachment above). Note: the previous dmesg output had been obtained with 3.9.8 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You are using some kind of storage device which overflows the buffer. Can you test without it or blacklist the storage module?
I don't know what it may be, as I don't have any external storage device connected. What module would that be and how do I blacklist it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The module is "usb_storage". You add it to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist It is possible that you have an internal SD card reader connected over USB.
Maybe I did have an SD card in. I'm attaching a new dmesg log. This time there's no SD cards, nor anything connected to any USB port. Using kernel 3.10.1-3.gb92a291-debug. Please let me know if it worked, otherwise I'll blacklist it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you try the patch from comment#18 or do you need a test kernel?
Thank you. To be honest I'd much rather use a test kernel if possible... I'm using multiple kernels from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/ and download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/standard/ I'd be afraid trying to installing a kernel manually or making my own rpm from an srpm, and end up messing up this system (which is being used for production). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Kernel to be found at https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:oneukum:bnc812087a

Hold your fire! This patch is not in a state I can get upstream. In particular, I need to know whether so drastic a timeout is needed and I need details of your system.

Probably relevant - it appears to work fine with the latest HEAD, i.e. 3.11.0-rc2-3.g15eacb9-desktop
To be more precise, with 3.11.0-rc2-3.g15eacb9-desktop - suspend to memory seems to work - suspend to disk fails (seems to suspend, but then can't boot properly) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
