[Bug 444912] New: Some Packages No Longer Build on 11. 0 After Latest Updates
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444912 Summary: Some Packages No Longer Build on 11.0 After Latest Updates Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- There have been several cases in the past two weeks where packages that I have built before, no longer build on openSuSE 11.0. These include: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0/s... and most recent, the new 8-11 ATI driver package: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/64bit/ati-... Attempting to build the madwifi driver from source with rpmbuild --rebuild madwifi-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2.src.rpm, results in: 21:20 alchemy~/madwifi/schmolle/src> rpmbuild --rebuild madwifi-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2.src.rpm Installing madwifi-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2.src.rpm warning: InstallSourcePackage: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 31812260 error: line 29: Unknown tag: %internal_kmp_error Attempting to build the ati driver: 20:22 alchemy~/tmp> sh ./ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE110-AMD64 Created directory fglrx-install.lc0HCT Verifying archive integrity... All good. Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.lc0HCT Something is definitely gone haywire with the configuration for basic rpm building. I don't know whether it is some type of kernel naming or package naming convention or what the problem is. I can still build the ati 8-9 driver, so the ATI issue is with the driver package, but I can't help suspect that there might be a relationship between why the new ATI driver will not build and why the madwifi rpm won't build either. Let me know if I can send additional information or do some additional type of testing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This might be one glaring reason:
22:22 alchemy~> su Password: [22:22 alchemy/home/david] # cd /usr/src/linux [22:23 alchemy/usr/src/linux] # make mrproper make: *** No rule to make target `mrproper'. Stop.

I spoke too soon. On one 11.0 x86_64 box, (alchemy) make mrproper failed. However, on a second 11.0 x86_64 box (ecstasy), make mrproper, make cloneconfig, make modules_prepare and make clean all worked as expected, but the ATI rpm still failed to build on ecstasy. Dunno what happened with alchemy. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok,
But first the solution to the make mrproper problem. This doesn't fix the ATI issue and I suspect there may be others scratching their heads.
I don't know how the most recent kernel update failed to update the kernel source and kernel obj links, but that is what happened. I have done nothing but say OK to the latest kernel update.
Not needing to, but not knowing better, I simply reinstalled the kernel-source that disclosed the link problem. (I know, I could have just changed the links, but I didn't, at the time, know which ones were messed up):
[22:58 alchemy/usr/src/linux] # rpm -Uvh --force /home/david/linux/kernel/rpms/2.6.25.18/kernel-source-2.6.25.18-0.2.x86_64.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:kernel-source ########################################### [100%] Changing symlink /usr/src/linux from linux-2.6.25.16-0.1 to linux-2.6.25.18-0.2 Changing symlink /usr/src/linux-obj from linux-2.6.25.16-0.1-obj to linux-2.6.25.18-0.2-obj
Ah hah! Now the kernel source is configured properly again -- doesn't explain how it got unconfigured to begin with, but all is again well.
I'll report back on the ATI driver test...
THIS SOLVED THE madwifi .src.rpm build problem -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That's it. ATI didn't take the current driver scripts from git.

Sorry, we don't support the ATI proprietary driver - we just make it available. It looks as though it just isn't synced up with 11.1
Thanks Jeff, Yes, we are familiar with the ATI driver binary and how Novell just gets the package for AMD/ATI, see: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338930 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338947 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=340459 Stefan Dirsch has done a great job helping to make the driver work for openSuSE and in resolving problems with the packaging with ATI in the past. I don' know whether the contact is still active, but ATI used to be in the loop on some issues through the contact atilinuxnovellbugs@ati.com. The present problem is not only that the driver isn't sync'ed with 11.1, the problem is that the driver no longer builds on anything later that 10.3. Stefan has identified the precise problem (see comment #8, this bug) so the issue seems to be coordinating with ATI to have the needed information put back in/added to the binary package. After that is accomplished, then performance degradation in the 8-10 and 8-11 drivers compared to the 8-9 need to be addressed. I don't know whether that will be an ATI issue with the driver or a Novell issue with glx/aiglx, but performance of the 8-10 driver and 8-11 driver (built on 10.3) has dropped to 50% of what it was with the 8-9 driver using a simple glxgears comparison. The decrease is very apparent in real-world use such as video and with compiz. It was my understanding from the past (may not apply now) that ATI only addressed approximately 5 Linux driver issues at a time. With the release of 11.1 slated for 16 days from now, the build issue on 11.1 should be elevated to one of those that gets fixed to avoid the backlash from all the people stuck with ATI cards when 11.1 debuts. Thanks for looking into this issue. It would be nice to be able to install the driver again. Thankfully, ATI makes the past releases of the driver available... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
