[Bug 570065] New: System brightness control not working on Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=570065 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=570065#c0 Summary: System brightness control not working on Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: marcus@swedcore.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091221 Firefox/3.5.7 The brightness function for the display isn't working on Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E laptops. I have seen a few other bug reports for other laptop manufacturer and come to the conclusion that this isn't limited to my brand, but instead of filling up other bug reports i choose to add my own to get a clean approach to this issue on VPCCW1S1E laptops. If this isn't a correct way please specify which bug i should attach my information to before making this one invalid/duplicate. I have gathered the following information from my system and hope that it is at least a start in finding a possible solution for this problem. Note: There is no difference when switching to or from battery power. One other thing with this laptop is that sax2 cannot properly detect the internal display, which results in black screen, i have manually overcome this issue but don't know if it is somehow related to this issue, but should it be so i can provide information regarding that to. Is there anything else i can check/provide to narrow down this issue. /Marcus Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Happens directly on fresh install of 11.2, no changes with applied updates. Actual Results: Display doesn't change brightness on button press or when switched to or from battery power. Expected Results: Brightness changing. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

sax2 cannot properly detect the internal display Sax2 is rather broken atm, AFAIK. Manual fiddling with xorg.conf is required on some machines.
Happens directly on fresh install of 11.2 Did it ever work before?
Can you attach acpidump and dmidecode output, please. Adding Mattia, possibly this is known or hopefully he can help. Have you already searched for a BIOS update? Better upgrade to the latest one, so that we can be sure we don't work on an already fixed problem. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not shure where and how to do this: You can add this when you boot. There should be a line where you can add additional boot params ones. To add these for longterm you can add it to /boot/grub/menu.lst at the end of the "kernel ..." line of your boot entry where already other boot parameters should be (e.g. splash=silent, vga=.., ..).
Hmm, a workaround could be to send a brightness up/down event to userspace and let the graphics driver do it (as another sony-laptop driver parameter?). Better would be of course to find out why it does not work "out of the box". -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I got a hint that acpi_osi"!..." could be broken with current kernels. This is not true. It's the command line/boot param size is limited to 256 instead of 2048 bytes. If you e.g. remove splash=silent, acpi_osi= param should fit in again. I also do not know whether 11.2 is affected at all.

From comment #7 and #11 (from Mattia):
Specific problems with brightness on Sonys are usually related to NVidia cards, all the others usually work fine. Anyway, I'm afraid but with Nvidias there is little to no chance to get brightness control working. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 558706 *** http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=558706 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
