ok..making php5-pear to provide pecl means that for it to be useful for something we need to pull autoconf, automake.. libtool... with pear that is a simple set of PHP scripts.. argh. that's not a good idea .

The problem mentioned in comment7 is already fixed for 10.3 but we have a problem, pecl still cannot be used to build anything because php5-devel does pull a lot of stuff as dependency but not a C compiler,
GCC and autotools are in the default set installed by the build script. As for building in the running system: only a few -devel packages in the distro require gcc, you can add it if you want, but it shouldn't be that hard for the user to figure out.
additionally I have spent a lot of time packaging almost all working pecl extensions in the server:php:extensions repository,users should just use that IMHO.
