[Bug 654262] New: US Robotics wlan card: ndiswrapper does not find manufacturer section
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=654262 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=654262#c0 Summary: US Robotics wlan card: ndiswrapper does not find manufacturer section Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: estellnb@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 SUSE/3.6.12-0.7.1 Firefox/3.6.12
ndiswrapper -i AUTORUN.INF couldn't find SourceDisksFiles section - continuing anyway... installing autorun ... couldn't get manufacturer section - installation may be incomplete
ndiswrapper -i ./Software/NPF/DE/AUTORUN.INF driver autorun is already installed
There are no more autorun.infs. Without the manufacturer section the wlan pcmcia card can not be recognized by the system (not displayed by Yast). According to US-robotics ndiswrapper was the only way to make use of this card. Is there any way to add the manufacturers section manually? Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately, this device is not listed as supported. But the list is not complete. Would it be possible to take a look if the driver is not loaded by chance "hwinfo --wlan" ? If not, this seems like wontfix for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can I not try to modprobe the appropriate driver manually? You can try and load the "orinoco", but maybe you'll have to put some firmware into the /lib/firmware [1]. Hint: "modinfo orinoco"
If that should not help what is about ndiswrapper? Yes, this the other possibility. But, to stay effective maybe it would be better to consider some of the native supported usb devices [2].

This works quite fine although only linuxant can make use of the 54Mbit/s mode. However this does not work:
wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -D ndiswrapper -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf ioctl[SIOCSIWPMKSA]: Invalid argument ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument ^CCTRL-EVENT-TERMINATING - signal 2 received
kwifimanager does also show an almost unreachable access point while linuxant showed 100% connection quality at the same distance.
iwconfig wlan0 essid tc # does also have no effect (iwconfig eth2 essid tc worked with linuxant) iwconfig wlan0 ap 01:80:c2:00:00:03 # no effect either (worked via wpa_suppl under linuxant) iwconfig wlan0 # looks the following after both iwconfigs wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:1 Mb/s Tx-Power:0 dBm Sensitivity=0/3 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
