[Bug 416093] New: Grub assigns wrong hd(X,Y) entry into /boot/grub/menu. lst in openSUSE 11.0
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=416093 Summary: Grub assigns wrong hd(X,Y) entry into /boot/grub/menu.lst in openSUSE 11.0 Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Booting AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: dieter.jurzitza@t-online.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- I added a second (self compiled) kernel including some patches with a different version ID by doing a rpm -hiv <newkernelname>. The kernel package has been created based on openSUSE's latest kernel-spec files by patching the version entry, the series.conf and the config.tar.bz2 files accordingly. So I definitively know that the resulting kernel package is based on openSUSE's installation mechanisms. However, the entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst are created wrong. An example: Say things would look as follows by default: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.11-0.1 root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.11-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/<diskname> .... initrd /initrd-2.6.25.11-0.1-default ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: failsafe### title Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.11-0.1 root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.11-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/<diskname> initrd /initrd-2.6.25.11-0.1-default after adding the second kernel, I get ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.11-0.1a root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.11-0.1a-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/<diskname> initrd /initrd-2.6.25.11-0.1a-default ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: failsafe### title Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.11-0.1a root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.11-0.1a-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/<diskname> initrd /initrd-2.6.25.11-0.1a-default ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.11-0.1 root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.11-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/<diskname> initrd /initrd-2.6.25.11-0.1-default ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: failsafe### title Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.11-0.1 root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25.11-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/<diskname> initrd /initrd-2.6.25.11-0.1-default Please note that the newly added boot entry gets "hd(0,0)" assigned as boot reference - what is wrong because the entry should say "hd(1,0)". The disk "hd(0,0) is a SATA-disk containing WINDOWS whereas the disk "hd(1,0)" is a PATA-disk. However, both the disks are said to be "SATA" in their name strings - I do not know whether or not this is of any meaning for this issue. With the (wrong) entry from above booting is - naturally - impossible. Took me quite a while to discover what had happened. Thank you for looking into this.
