The recent ALSA version should work as is. Try alsa-driver-kmp package available on openSUSE BS multimedia:audio repo:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/
If it still doesn't work, let me know.
alsa-1.0.15 didn't do much for me, on the contrary it made it worse since rcalsasound restart trick didn't work anymore someone (oldcpu) from suse forums brought to my attention that there is a new option=dell-3stack for dell. I tried that with alsa 1.0.14 and sound now works properly. I'll try again with alsa 1.0.15 and let you know. Cheers P.S. I also updated the bios to rev.4 recently. I don't know if that had any effect on it! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Strange, I got positive reports that this dell model works with the latest ALSA driver.
Try again with the latest alsa-driver-kmp. After installing it, remove any model option, and do reboot once. Then BIOS will reset the HD-audio configuration properly. Otherwise the driver keeps the old setting from the previous model. Of course, don't forget to adjust mixer setting again.
Hi, The sound finally works with 1.0.15 (alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.15.hg20080122_2.6.22.5_31-1.1.i586.rpm). But you definitely need to add model dell-3stack option. This new driver also enables the mute button which wasn't functional with the previous driver. As I wrote, after you change the model option, don't do "rcalsasound restart" but just reboot. Some model options override the BIOS setting, and you cannot restore it. Thus, without rebooting, the results are useless, unfortunately.
(And, the error above is irrelevant with the model option change...)
Don't worry, I didn't do rcalsasound restart before copying the codec files. That was just a test to see if it would do any difference... And you are right the error is irrelevant with the model option change ! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
