[Bug 546389] New: Not always possible to set distinct system administrator password
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=546389 Summary: Not always possible to set distinct system administrator password Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 8 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: binner@kde.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-3.1 Firefox/3.5.3 You can only switch to "administrator password!=user password" mode the first time the user settings module is shown in the installation workflow. When you (re)enter it from the "Installations Settings" summary view, you can uncheck "[ ] Use this password for system administrator" checkbox but it will not ask for a root password and reset the setting as soon as you leave the module with "Accept". Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start installation 2. Give user name/password, keep [x] Use this password for system administrator checked, "Accept" 3. Enter user settings module from "Installation Settings" summary view 4. Uncheck "[ ] Use this password for system administrator, "Accept" 4. Reenter user settings module from "Installation Settings" summary view or start installation to see that setting was reset to "[x] Use this password for system administrator" -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You can only switch to "administrator password!=user password" mode the first time the user settings module is shown in the installation workflow.
When you uncheck it for the first time, the next dialog will be a dialog asking for root password.
3. Enter user settings module from "Installation Settings" summary view 4. Uncheck "[ ] Use this password for system administrator, "Accept" 4. Reenter user settings module from "Installation Settings" summary view or start installation to see that setting was reset to "[x] Use this password for system administrator"
This is intentional. From "Installation Settings", you do not enter subworkflow, but only specific modules, where "user" and "root pw" are distinct. So when you enter just user module, you only change user's password there, and the checkbox is used when you are actually entering user's password. Root password you've already set will: - be changed again when you set new password for user and have the [x] Use this password for system administrator checked - will not be changed when you uncheck the checkbox and change the user password - will _not_ be changed when you uncheck the checkbox and do not change the user password If you want to change the root password explicitely, you can enter root password dialog from Installation Settings directly. I think current behavior makes sense. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is not true. I guess you meant to write "When you uncheck it the first time the dialog is shown".
From "Installation Settings", you do not enter subworkflow, but only specific modules, where "user" and "root pw" are distinct.
Why is the "[ ] Use this password for system administrator" checkbox then shown when entering "user" module from "Installation Settings"? And even defaulting to it? I find this highly confusing, either you have the split of modules for user and root password after the initial wizard run - or not. Having the split in the "Installation Settings" only and having the "user" module look the same like in "wizard mode" but act differently is bad. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, I mean what I write. When I uncheck "[ ] Use this password for system administrator" first time I see it, the next dialog is root password dialog.

Why is the "[ ] Use this password for system administrator" checkbox then shown when entering "user" module from "Installation Settings"? And even defaulting to it?
The reason why the checkbox is there is still the same: for syncing the new password (typically you enter this dialog again to change the password) to root as well. The default value for the first time comes from installation defaults, for the second time from your current situation. You already have the same passwords when you enter Create New User dialog again, so it is checked. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
