The router I'm not able to establish the connection to is a Netgear WGR614 v5 (I also updated the firmware to make sure I have the latest) I am able to connect to a Linksys router with WPA-PSK authentication and I was able to connect to an insecure Network, I suppose it's a Linksys router too, given that the SSID is "linksys". I use KDE4 NetworkManager but also tested the connection to the Netgear router with ifup on 11.2, which didn't work either. It seems we can blame NetworkManager for this.
I have added the NM maintainer in CC. Tambet, would it be possible to comment ? When the NM is on the wpa_supplicant reports [1]. Could you help to isolate the problem ? When I switch NM off I observe no complains about the SIOCSIWAUTH support. See attachment. I start the wpa_supplicant [1] with the configuration [2] and set the IP manually, because Netgear provides no dhcp server. The iwconfig provides information [3]. Then I can connect to the network and transfer files [4]. There will be new unified wifi extension nl80211. But this is still "work in progress". The iwlagn and wext extensions changed since 2.6.27. The wpa_supplicant has been changed too. Consequently NM should accept these changes either. NM controls wpa_supplicant. The wpa_supplicant can control iwlagn standalone, but fails under the NM. The message "WEXT: Driver did not support SIOCSIWAUTH ..." does not mean that the driver is broken. This message means NM requires something which is not there anymore. Tambet, you should check the changes how wpa_supplicant is controlling the iwlagn and modify the NM to act accordingly.
For the N-th time, Vladimir, NM DOES NOT CONTROL wifi devices directly.
