[Bug 809623] New: kdump doesn't work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=809623 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=809623#c0 Summary: kdump doesn't work Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: munderl@tnt.uni-hannover.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux x86_64) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.14 I set up kexec/kdump, addede crashkernel=256M-:128M to the commandline and the logs say the kdump kernel is loaded. cat /sys/kernel/kexec_crash_loaded returns 1. Still no kdump :| The Oops is printed to the console and that's all what happens. I tried to configure kdump to write the dump on a nfs volume but that does't do anything either. I'm using a fresh install of 12.3, kernel is 3.7.10-1.1-default, bootloader is grub2. Maybe this is related to the bug #801063. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. set up kdump 2. crash the system (echo c > /proc/sysrq_trigger) 3. kdump kernel is not loaded Actual Results: Nothing happens, dump kernel is not loaded. Expected Results: kdump kernel should start and write the kdump -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As the computer freezes after echo c > /proc/sysrq_trigger its hard to tell. But on the console I get half of a kernel BUG dump:
SysRq : Trigger a crash BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null) IP: [<ffffffff81356eed>] sysrq_handle_crash+0xd/0x20 PGD: 25271b067 PUD 2539b4067 PMD 0 Ooops: 0002 [#1] SMP
... and so on. It stops in the middle of the register dump.
I suppose that should not happen this way...?
The above BUG is totally normal. sysrq-c crashes the kernel by forcing a NULL pointer deference so this output is expected, but should be followed by the loading of the kdump kernel. The screenshot is therefore not helpful. Usually a serial console is more helpful, I am curious if you can kexec a standard kernel? # kexec -l /boot/vmlinux --command-line="`cat /proc/cmdline`" --initrd=/boot/initrd # kexec -e the above assumes your symlinks for vmlinux/initrd are correct, else use specific filenames. Also if you cannot kexec the above kernel, trying with a serial console would be the next step. Without access to your hardware there isn't anything I can diagnose. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
