[Bug 300340] New: thinkpad_acpi doesn't recognize changes in brightness
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=300340 Summary: thinkpad_acpi doesn't recognize changes in brightness Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: trenn@novell.com ReportedBy: cstender@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: thoenig@novell.com Found By: --- If you change the brightness level with Fn+Home or Fn+End thinkpad_acpi doesn't get it. Starting with a brightness level 7 (max) you can reduce the brightness to a min level with Fn+End, but "cat /sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/actual_brightness" shows still 7. From now on you can't increase the brightness in software anymore. (except you write 0 and then something between 0 and 8 to thinkpad_screen/brightness). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

SSDT includes the video extensions. This is what I feard, that vendors are going to implement the lately included video extensions (maybe this is even mandatory for M$ Vista?). IMO video driver should get used togther with the thinkpad (and other vendor specific) drivers. However the video module is rather untested and this is probably too late for 10.3. Not sure what to do here, I expect using the patch from Holger is the way to go for 10.3, some more opinions are appreciated.
Christopher: Can you try to not load the thinkpad driver and load the video driver instead. Is brightness control working then? If not do you get some warning/error messages in dmesg/syslog?
The video module is not an option. See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=260675 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

- brightness control seems to work (when closing kpowersave), but I noticed some syslog entries when increasing the brightness level:
Aug 24 18:24:22 tank-testing logger: thinkpad_acpi_events Custom event script for ThinkPad thinkpad_acpi driver Aug 24 18:24:22 tank-testing logger: thinkpad_acpi_events Fn+Home hotkey: keycode 128 serial 4112. action: brighter display
You can silently ignore these. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
