It seems to be a permission problem, because, when I log in as "root", the applet shows the devices. As I had updated to MS3 and was having some other problems, I am now trying a fresh install. I then installed Build 0174 on a 32-bit VirtualBox VM. Again the applet worked correctly. With this setup, I used USB passthru to test wireless connections. The connections worked with WPA, WPA2, and WEP encryption over my device using rtl8187 as the driver. AFAICT, this bug is fixed, but there seems to be something wrong with the system policies. Every time yo make a change in any setting, a root authorization box pops up. It is as annoying as Windows 7!!
